Where do Clunkers go?

As the U.S. Senate approves a $2 billion boost for the “Cash for Clunkers” program, photographer Brian Snyder speaks with Tom Barenboim, owner of Clark Chrysler Jeep Dodge dealership in Methuen, Massachusetts, and parts manager Fred Coco about their experience with the program, and what happens to the clunkers once they are traded in.

What a waste of a good car.

Gosh! The politicians have finally figured out that putting MORE money in the hands of consumers, as opposed to taxing them to death, or giving bailouts to the incompetent old boys club, actually works in a demand economy. BUT destroying the engine does NOT destroy the vehicle. There are auto body crushers and shredders which will destroy the VEHICLE but this is not being done. Just slap a new motor in one of the old clunkers and in a day its back on the road. What slow thinking bureaucrats and politicians dreamed up this foolishness??

This program is taking money from smaller “used car” dealerships and putting it into the hands of the UAW. This is nothing other than MORE bailout money for the big auto companies.

What a bum deal from Obama and to think people actually thought and believed he had some plans and changes. It’s business as usual. They should have done this to the housing industry and in general offered cash for losers.

ok so detroit happily made big-fat cars that people irresponsibly bought so detroit kept making more, bigger, fatter cars and on it went until the music stopped and detroit was screwed. now the same folks are gettin the car they should have had all along at a great price and detroit gets to stay in business. this may be ironic but where is the justice?

Destroying the engine is a good idea, theoretically, however that is very rarely done where I live. The so-called clunkers are sold to salvage yards, used car lots, body shops, etc. by the dealers trying to make yet another buck. The clunker is often back on the road within a day or two with a fresh VIN, detailed, and ready to go. Pretty cool. Here’s thought – get rid of the car dealers.

Being wasteful.
Destroying a perfectly good engine seems wasteful to me. Am I supposed to suppose to believe that GM and Ford are now suddenly going to make/use radically different internal combustion gasoline engines in their new cars? We should remember that manufacturing a new vehicle is equal to about 1/3 of the total pollution that vehicle produces over its lifetime. The destruction of working vehicles (which I would not exactly call ‘clunkers’) to get a few thousand dollar deduction from government on a new car is indicative of a wasteful society – that the US undoubtedly is.

We’ve been buying fuel efficient cars for decades, so in some ways it feels we’re being penalized for it. But, on the other hand, anything that takes old dangerous, polluting, gas guzzling cars off the road, stimulates the economy and makes people feel good about something is not bad.
Now if we could only do something about the rich people in their giant SUVs we’d have it made.

A car is a very complex piece of machinery. Each individual part is vigorously,
tested before it ever goes into production models and, like chain,relies
upon every other part in order for the vehicle to function.in our Fine Line Auto Station.

Wow, I have a hard time believing we are getting out of this the way the hand out money. They would be better to just give us the money to the Rich and ask them to create two jobs with it. If they can create two jobs with the money, they can have more money. Now that is a real stimulas, giving it to the people who know how to create money.

 

Who ever come up with this idear is a complete IDIOT I drove to see the Clunkers & many of them were very good autos.Better then many on the road. Why wreck a good running auto that has no problems and keep selling gas Guzzlers. If each auto is vigorously,tested why is there so many caravans & Windstars with junk transmissions. Windstars & Ventures with over heating problems that sometimes conpleatly wreck the engines. Why do Hondas & Toyotas run forever. Why dont the US build a car thats easy to work on instead of the compleat junk they have been building the last 15-20 years. I had a $80 GEO Metro that lasted 4.5 years got over 45 miles MPGs And I only had to replace the Battery & Radiator @ a cost of less then $200. Very easy to do repairs on.
