Jim, as a 12 yr playa veteran, I’m always on the lookout for a good write-up of the event. Most fall far short, but I really like how you conveyed the experience. And, of course, your photos are truly beautiful. Thank you very much.
I expect you will be better prepared next year – carry water on your back always – I won’t mention a brand name here, but it is essential.
and PlanetMitch: I’m 52, I spend a week out there every year and feel great. I sleep in a tent, shower every day (our camp builds one), and rest in the shade when it’s hot. You can too!

Great photos….this 54 year old does just fine thank you and so can you planetMitch. But you do need to feed yourself and water yourself and get some sleep. Oh and as far as the bikes are concerned. Wash the gears with vinegar, rinse with water, then blow dry and lubricate them. They should be fine. Vinegar and Dr. Bronners is a person’s best friend on the playa. Wow – great story and photos – thanks so much for sharing! It convinces me and my 54 year old body that tho Burning Man looks cool and would be a blast to photograph, there’s no way I could survive it… just no way. Glad to have people like you who can and do share their experience.

Jim – thanks for the great pictures. Peg and I were sitting next to you during the Temple burn… wish I’d known who you were at the beginning rather that at the end. Next time, yes: stay up all night and get the great sunrise shots, but also get some food, water and sleep in the mornings.

Dig ‘em, man. Love your perspective & take on the things I’d all week. If you were the Reuters guy who was shooting the dance party out at DisOrient (my camp) you should know that the camp planners would love a copy for their site.
