Great narrative and pictures!! Overall a great piece of journalism!! I think that eventhough US got stuck in to Afghanistan for the wrong reasons, if NATO troops retreat within 2014 (deadline), this will lead to the fall of the country to Taliban (once again)! I think that NATO forces should remain in the area, but implement a democratization of the country. President Karzai is a pupet and a corrupt leader. He cannot unite or inspire his people!!! There is a very interesting article here: http://telia.co.gr/blog/afghanistan-2014-is-retreat-of-western-soldiers-feasible/ demonstrating why this is wrong to retreat now from Afghanistan and leave the country to fall once again to terrorist hands.

Same thing in Vietnam. Make a base and hold up inside. Dumb then and dumb now. The study showed we should have not established a base to squat in but stay out in the towns, villages, mountains. Just like the enemy does. That way the people see you and know you are there doing the job. In Vietnam we hid behind the walls and let the enemy have all the rest. Yes, fear was a very much part of it,same as now.

Thanks Erik for your tremendous risk in Afghanistan. I personally appreciate your time there, as you interacted, photographed and reported on the conditions of the life that my son, SPC Chris Carlen, at Bari Alai, is experiencing there. Your photos are incredible and again, I appreciate your work!! ~~ A Worried Mom

nice read. indeed, where is the war going? so much deaths, so much destruction already took place. everyone, especially the innocent souls, deserves peace and a life devoid of fear.
