We complain when the train or bus is late but at least we always have something to eat and probably somewhere to sleep if it came to that. I sponsored a Yugoslav soldier who'd escaped over the mountains to Greece with his wife and small son more than 20 years ago. We also put him through university here and he tells me that every day he thinks about what might have happened if caught. His crime as a Macedonian was to marry a Serb. He would have been imprisoned and shot. Despite some family there he will never go back. Makes you think a bit doesn't it? We take our freedoms for granted in the west.
