Rights vary by country. In the USA, you can photography pretty much anyone, in most places when use is editorial.

I have started to write some books, including on street people, who are out and about.

So long as I do not use their image to endorse a product, it falls under editorial/art use and it's pretty much okay.

Certain other areas, like nudes and children in certain situations a model release is handy.

Here for instance is a link to an eBook, of maternity nudes. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B008NR8GUS/?tag=glamourphotog-20 For this, we have a signed model release with government issued ID, etc.

Thanks for bringing the story to our notice.Commendable initiative. Great answer to all those shamless and ungrateful cynics who keep saying "is desh ka kuch nahi hoga". Just wanted to know if the lady in question here was okay with being shot while giving birth to a baby. Such a situation for a woman as I know is personal and not many would like to have such pictures published.

Good Job Prakash. Its a good start for the rural women who have had no access to proper health-care. I hope they extend this to all women health issues.

The photographer did a good job, but my question is "Why wasn't a woman photographer sent?" There would have been a lot less mention of feeling like a thief and maybe more information would have been covered that was pertinent to the women in India, questions that a woman who has had children would think to ask. I appreciate his efforts, but next time you want to cover a maternity ward full of birthing ladies, please send a woman.

Nice story Vivek, I hope Angur's permission was sought before taking her pictures. I can complely understand your point as how you ust have felt being there in thsi 700 people village to record this story, how difficult can it to witness this life changing experince.

Well, did you get authorization from Anguri about using her picture? That should help your conscience's conflict.
