There are too many dangerous variables to overcome. These containers should have locked covers, with only a wide window to deposit throwaways. Alternately, there is a wonderful and hilarious book called “Mongo,” about professional New Yorkers who early-morning scavenge the upper crust streets for amazing antiques, furniture, clothing, and other pricey, discarded objects.

They would throw out brown bags with fresh bananas and apples and boxes of grapes and wrapped energy bars and wrapped juice boxes their mothers had packed.
Sure you have to wash the fruit but it’s not sticky or gross, and you have to wash store-bought fruit as well.
