Lucas, when I saw boy's face I instantly thought of my own boy who suffered a serious eye injury and would have lost his eye without the care he got in Washington. I shudder to think how people deal with serious medical issues in places like Afghanistan. I was greatly relieved that this was just a bee sting. Nice story.

beautiful story - beautiful photos - thank you for reminding people that afghanistan is not just a spot on a globe. look at how small the world really is - i can see boys and girls in blue right here in america - the sad part is their reception in the cities and byways here are often not as kind.

As if Muslims anywhere would be on the side of the armies of those who bomb the hell out of them, revile the Qur'an, then act as if they're doing their uncivilized "little brown brothers" some kind of favor.

Lovely story, Lucas, and the photos are stunning. Pieces like this humanize the process and reminds us of the people struggling to make a life in Afghanistan.
