Rick Santorum claims everyone who lives in the West Bank is Israeli

November 22, 2011

At a campaign stop in Iowa yesterday, Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum said he believes that the West Bank was justly acquired by Israel during war, so that today, “all the people who live in the West Bank are Israelis, they’re not Palestinians.”

Israeli settlements in the West Bank are legitimate, he said, because the area was “ground that was gained during war” after “an aggressive attack on the part of Jordan and other countries on Israel”:

“The bottom line is that that is legitimately Israeli country. And they have a right to do within their country just like we have a right to do within our country. If they want to negotiate with Israelis, and all the people who live in the West Bank are Israelis, they’re not Palestinians. There is no ‘Palestinian.’ This is Israeli land.”

Santorum did not clarify whether he believes everyone who lives in the West Bank should be accorded all the rights and responsibilities of Israeli citizenship.

This is insulting and embarassing.
I hope this over simplified reasoning is for the US political market to buy an illogical policy and never employed in high level diplomatic strategies, for if it is, we are running in circles.

This is symptonmatic of so many of our leaders. They KNOW the reality they are trying to address but instead of solutions we get a highly funded dogma.

To those in the congressional cocoon the people on the buses and subways, the people working two part-time jobs(without benefits) at nights while their kids are home alone, working families paying more and more for less and less health care and signing on $100,000 loans for their children’s education, just hoping to hang onto their jobs, is at most an accounting problem. Balance both sides of the ledger and let the chips fall where they may. Don’t think about it.

We have allowed them to screw this up royally. Spending too much on inefficient programs while allowing the wealthiest game the system.

They did this for profit and power. Those of us on the outside pay. Those on the inside get. It is against their interest to solve problems.

Interesting, Israel doesn’t seem to agree. If the West Bank were Israel (they would have to annex it for it to be), then all the West Pank Arabs would become Israeli citizens and be allowed to vote in Israeli elections. That’s how the American Southwest worked. They became states. Israel wants to remain a Jewish state. As such, they have to give up the West Bank.
