Twitter Collection: The Challenger explosion, 30 years on

Thirty years ago today the space shuttle Challenger exploded only 73 seconds into its journey, killing the six astronauts and one school teacher on board. The teacher, Christa McAuliffe, was the first U.S. civilian to go into space.

The explosion was triggered when a rubber seal in one of the shuttle’s twin booster rockets failed.
