Twitter Collection: #LIGO finds gravitational waves

February 11, 2016

The hashtag #LIGO sent ripples through Twitter as scientists said on Thursday they have for the first time detected gravitational waves.

These waves in space and time were hypothesized by physicist Albert Einstein a century ago.

Their discovery by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) opens a whole new window for studying the cosmos.

As Twitter user @sarcasticrover tweeted: “Gravitational Waves: No longer just a very complicated and dangerous 80’s hairstyle. Now a reality. #LIGO.”
