I get the thesis about getting your “house in order”…but come now…the vast majority of Americans and their 401Ks… could be facing one of those—one in a hundred year events—[i.e. what the geek/algo traders call 3 sigma event]! This means that to survive this katrina financial hurricane — you better have insurance! but how(?) now that insurance on your portfolio is either prohibitely too expensive to buy [with a VIX @40]…or almost impossible to execute a “hedge” strategy [i.e. long-short position–without exposure to huge ‘tail” risk. But that could blow-up in your face: consider the 2008 crash! …It looks this “is” the perfect storm: the U.S. with debt @ 100 of the GDP with annual deficits @ $1 trillion and Europe going into sovereign default because of opaque [unlimited liabilities]. So with no foreign buyers to buy the debt here and Europe —total collapse in government finances— is not impossible. Ergo, what to do in depression? I can only think of barter, gold, and maybe dollars [but I am not sure if the planet trust Washington anymore].

In times of crises, it is better to pause for reflection than follow the herd instinct. My compliments to the author.

Our most fundamental institutions are failing and shaking.

No doubt we are in a significant crisis and a period of deep, fundamental change. It is right to be afraid. It is wrong to trust institutions. Stay alert and buy no long term anything until you know what will survive and what will be greatly changed.
