Soccer-Injuries fail to dent River Plate climb to top of table

BUENOS AIRES, April 20 (Reuters) – River Plate lost two of their Colombian players through injury but were able to climb to the top of the standings with a 1-0 victory over Velez Sarsfield in an exciting Final Championship clash at the Monumental on Sunday.

Striker Teo Gutierrez scored the only goal after half an hour but had to off with a leg injury early in the second half that sparked fears for his fitness with less than two months to go to the World Cup finals.

Keepers to the fore in River’s clash with Rafaela

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) – River Plate’s 2-0 win over Atletico Rafaela in the Argentine first division revolved around goalkeepers on Sunday, with four current and one former keeper taking the field at various stages.

Before kickoff, River’s greatest keeper Amadeo Carrizo, who helped them win seven league titles between 1945 and 1957, was feted on the Monumental pitch and made the club’s honorary president at the age of 87.

Rival strikers clash over kisses ahead of Boca-River derby

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) – Football players often kiss the badge on their shirts after scoring a goal, suggesting a strong emotional tie with the team they are playing for and their fans.

Boca Juniors striker Emmanuel Gigliotti, however, said this was a stupid gesture as he jousted with River Plate’s Fernando Cavenaghi in the build-up to the “superclasico”, Argentina’s biggest derby at La Bombonera on Sunday (2115 GMT).
