Soccer-Top players rely on Argentine league for World Cup

Feb 5 (Reuters) – Boca Juniors duo Fernando Gago and Agustin Orion and Newell’s Old Boys’ Maxi Rodriguez and Ever Banega have more than the Argentine league title to play for in the Final championship that kicks off this weekend.

They all want to be part of Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella’s World Cup squad in Brazil, while River Plate’s Colombian striker Teo Gutierrez has also set his sights on the June tournament.

Podolski double helps Arsenal rout Coventry in FA Cup

LONDON (Reuters) – Arsenal striker Lukas Podolski scored twice in the opening half-hour as the Premier League leaders romped to a 4-0 win over third-tier Coventry City in their FA Cup fourth round tie at the Emirates on Friday.

Podolski’s goals were set up by fellow Germans Mezut Ozil and Per Mertesacker as the 10-times winners eased into the last 16 on a rainy night in north London.

Top Argentine teams face rest of season under new coaches

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) – Ricardo Gareca, the longest serving coach at one team in the Argentine top flight, has decided to leave Velez Sarsfield after winning four trophies during five years in charge.

Gareca, 55, told sporting manager Christian Bassedas, the former Velez, Newcastle United and Argentina midfielder, of his decision in a three-hour meeting late on Monday.

Rugby-Argentina to hold Super Rugby franchise talks next year

BUENOS AIRES, Dec 19 (Reuters) – Argentina hope to have a Super Rugby franchise from 2016 and will hold talks with senior officials early next year, the national union’s (UAR) communications manager Guillermo Quevedo said.

“There will be a meeting with the Sanzar (South Africa, New Zealand and Australia) nations in March,” Quevedo told Reuters at the launch of a new Pumas marketing drive at UAR headquarters.

Passarella, sensing the fans had had enough of him, declined to run for office again in Sunday’s election and victory went to Rodolfo D’Onofrio, the man he pipped to the post four years ago.

San Lorenzo clinch Argentine title

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) – San Lorenzo won the Argentine league title on Sunday with a 0-0 draw at Velez Sarsfield as outgoing champions Newell’s Old Boys were held 2-2 in Rosario.

The Saints, coached by former Barcelona and Spain striker Juan Antionio Pizzi, topped the Inicial championship with 33 points from 19 matches, two more than Velez, Newell’s and Lanus.
