Sabella treads familiar ground with Argentina

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) – The parallels between Alejandro Sabella and the man he hopes to emulate, 1986 World Cup-winning coach Carlos Bilardo, are enough to convince some fans that the time is ripe for Argentina’s third World Cup success.

The link is Estudiantes, the small club from La Plata who have won the South American Libertadores Cup four times, three with Bilardo as playmaker in the late 1960s and once with Sabella as their coach in 2009.

Argentina’s ‘Fab Four’ key to team’s success

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) – Lionel Messi has won every major global title bar the World Cup and Argentina are hoping he will be able to tick that last remaining box with a side considered among the favourites for the title in their biggest rival’s backyard.

If the “Fantastic Quartet” of Messi, Gonzalo Higuain, Sergio Aguero and Angel Di Maria are on song, Argentina can emerge victorious in Brazil to claim a third World Cup victory.

Colombia need good Teo to show up in Brazil

By Rex Gowar

(Reuters) – With Radamel Falcao missing, Colombia need Teofilo Gutierrez to show the sparkling form he displayed in the qualifiers and shun an impetuous streak that led him to walk out on teams in Turkey, Argentina and Mexico.

Gutierrez, who once pointed a realistic-looking toy gun at angry Racing Club team mates in the dressing room after being sent off, was a perfect foil to Falcao, scoring six goals as Colombia finished second in the South American qualifying group.

Argentina’s 1950 no-show sparked years of gloom

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) – Argentina are going to the World Cup in Brazil for the first time looking to correct a big mistake that led to years of national grief after their withdrawal from the 1950 tournament in conflict with the Brazilian Football Confederation.

The most successful of South America’s nations in the 1940s, a golden age in Argentine soccer, they decided against sending a team to defend their Copa America title in Brazil in 1949 and Brazil took offence.

“Little Witch” Veron hangs up broomstick again

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) – Former Argentina midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron retired for the second time on Sunday at the age of 39, bowing out with a 2-1 loss for boyhood club Estudiantes but with “no regrets” from a career that yielded silverware across the globe.

Veron came out of retirement last year to play another season in Argentina’s top flight, having already taken a role as a sporting director at the club where his father Juan Ramon was known as ‘La Bruja’ – ‘The Witch’ – for his spellbinding runs on the left wing in the 1960s.
