Argentina held 0-0 by Colombia despite Messi cameo

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) – Lionel Messi played for the last half hour but could not help Argentina make the breakthrough against Colombia as the sides played out a 0-0 draw in an electric World Cup qualifier at the Monumental on Friday.

Both sides were reduced to 10 men midway through the first half when Argentina striker Gonzalo Higuain and Colombia central defender Cristian Zapata were shown the red card for kicking out at each other.

Soccer-Newell’s Old Boys slip up in race for Argentine title

BUENOS AIRES, June 3 (Reuters) – Argentine championship leaders Newell’s Old Boys failed to take advantage of slip ups by their closest rivals when they lost 2-1 at All Boys on Monday.

Newell’s remain three points clear of River Plate, who lost 2-0 at Argentinos Juniors on Sunday, and Lanus, held 0-0 at home by Belgrano.

BUENOS AIRES, June 2 (Reuters) – Argentinos Juniors stunned Argentine title challengers River Plate 2-0 at the Diego Armando Maradona stadium on Sunday to give a huge boost to their chances of avoiding relegation.

Defender Julio Barraza and midfielder Rodrigo Gomez scored the goals in the final 10 minutes of an intense Clausura championship clash in which River were looking to join Newell’s Old Boys at the top of the standings.

With the aggregate score over two legs 0-0 and no extra time in the competition, the rivals went straight to the shootout which began with Boca playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme missing the opening spot kick.
