Nadal reaches first final of year in Argentine Open

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) – Rafael Nadal, pushed to the limit in a high octane first set, made up for his semi-final defeat at the Rio Open a week ago by reaching the Argentine Open final with a 7-6(7) 6-2 victory over Carlos Berlocq on Saturday.

The world number four will meet a fourth Argentine in succession in the tournament, 2007 champion Juan Monaco, in Sunday’s showpiece match looking for a 65th career title and record-equalling 46th on clay.

Osvaldo heads winner on Boca debut in Libertadores Cup

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) – Daniel Osvaldo exceeded his wildest expectations by scoring the winner on his debut for Boca Juniors on Thursday as the Argentine side enjoyed a 2-1 home victory over Uruguay’s Wanderers in the Libertadores Cup.

Osvaldo, who joined Boca on loan from Southampton two weeks ago, headed home Nicolas Colazo’s cross two minutes before halftime, having earlier missed a chance with a spectacular scissors kick.

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) – Substitute Cristian Suarez scored four minutes from time to give Mexico’s Atlas a surprise 1-0 away win over 2013 champions Atletico Mineiro of Brazil in the Libertadores Cup on Wednesday.

Juan Medina split the Mineiro defence with a well-weighted through ball for Suarez, who beat the offside trap and shot low past goalkeeper Victor in a match played in heavy rain.

Soccer-Eight red cards, fireworks mar Libertadores Cup return

BUENOS AIRES, Feb 17 (Reuters) – The Libertadores Cup followed a familiar script on the opening night of the group phase on Tuesday with eight players sent off and Universidad de Chile fans putting their team at risk of sanctions for using fireworks.

Referee Raul Orozco brandished his red card at five players in Montevideo, where Wanderers rallied to beat Venezuelan champions Zamora 3-2 at Parque Central in Group Five.

Sanction hangs over San Lorenzo in Libertadores defence

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) – San Lorenzo must keep a tight rein on the behaviour of their fans if the Argentine club are to successfully defend the Libertadores Cup which kicks off with the group phase this week.

Not only were they drawn in a tough section but they also have to play their first home match against 2012 champions Corinthians of Brazil on March 4 behind closed doors after crowd trouble at last year’s final.

San Lorenzo begin 30-team championship with 2-0 win

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) – Libertadores Cup holders San Lorenzo began their Argentine league championship campaign with a convincing 2-0 win over promoted Colon at the Nuevo Gasometro on Saturday.

Their opening goal after half an hour came from a classic quick break launched by former Atletico Madrid and Argentina goalkeeper Leo Franco who sent full back Emmanuel Mas on a surging run down the left.

Soccer-Italy striker Osvaldo joins Boca on loan

BUENOS AIRES, Feb 11 (Reuters) – Hot-headed Italy striker Daniel Osvaldo signed for Boca Juniors on loan from Southampton on Wednesday, making the Argentine club his fourth in 13 months and 11th in all.

Having ended a loan spell at Inter Milan after falling out with coach Roberto Mancini last month and flown into Buenos Aires on Wednesday, the Argentine-born Osvaldo confirmed he had signed for the team he supported as a boy.
