Argentina coach Phelan quits ahead of European tour

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) – Santiago Phelan has resigned as Argentina coach ahead of the Pumas’ European tour that includes tests against England, Wales and Italy next month, the Argentine Rugby Union (UAR) said on Monday.

Phelan, whose contract had been due to end in December, brought forward his decision to leave after his team finished bottom of the southern hemisphere Rugby Championship for the second year in succession with six defeats.

Soccer-Sabella ponders Argentina’s defensive frailties

BUENOS AIRES, Oct 16 (Reuters) – Argentina boast firepower second to none but coach Alejandro Sabella wore a frown during and after his team’s 3-2 defeat by Uruguay in their closing World Cup qualifier.

Sabella said Argentina would go to the Brazil finals next year to win the country’s third title and with an attack that includes Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Higuain, Sergio Aguero and Angel Di Maria few would belittle their chances.

Chile, Ecuador reach World Cup, Uruguay to playoff

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) – Chile beat Ecuador 2-1 in their closing South American qualifier in Santiago on Tuesday as both went through automatically to the 2014 World Cup finals in Brazil.

The result consigned Uruguay, despite beating group winners Argentina 3-2 in Montevideo, to a playoff against Jordan next month for one more berth in the finals.

Newell’s retain three-point lead with 1-0 win over River

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) – Newell’s Old Boys beat River Plate 1-0 in Rosario on Sunday to stay three points clear at the top of the Argentine Inicial championship.

Victor Lopez scored the only goal 10 minutes from time after the match at the Marcelo Bielsa stadium was interrupted for 23 minutes in the second half due to a lighting failure.
