Hindu party BJP wants beef ban at 2010 Commonwealth Games in India
The Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the main opposition party in the Indian parliament, wants to ban beef from the menu at this year’s Commonwealth Games in New Dehli on Oct. 3-14 to showcase the country’s “cultural values and age-old traditions”.
The cow is worshipped in India and and a majority of Hindus do not eat beef. The slaughter of cattle is also banned in several states.
Top seed Soderling out in Chennai first round
CHENNAI, India (Reuters) – Swede Robin Soderling’s preparations for this month’s Australian Open suffered a setback on Tuesday when he lost 6-4 7-5 to American Robby Ginepri in the first round of the Chennai Open where he was the top seed.
“Everything went wrong. I tried my best but nothing went my way. I haven’t felt like that in a very long time,” world number eight Soderling told reporters after his error-strewn display against the world number 100.

CHENNAI, India (Reuters) – Swedish world number eight Robin Soderling believes he can challenge for a first grand slam success at this month’s Australian Open after a breakthrough victory over world number one Roger Federer.
Soderling, 25, claimed his first victory over the Swiss ace at an exhibition tournament in Abu Dhabi on January 1 after having lost all 12 of their previous meetings, including defeat at last year’s French Open final.
