Wall Street Week Ahead: Restaurants’ uptick offers hope for consumer discretionaries

NEW YORK (Reuters) – An improving U.S. economy has failed to galvanize the consumer discretionary sector so far this year, but a recent rally in restaurant stocks as the holidays approach could herald happier days ahead for other retailers.

The S&P 500 consumer discretionary sector index is up about 3 percent for the year, with only the S&P energy index performing worse.

BlackBerry options active ahead of San Francisco event

NEW YORK, Nov 12 (Reuters) – Options on BlackBerry Ltd’s
U.S.-listed shares attracted a surge of bullish
activity on Wednesday, a day before the Canadian tech firm is
scheduled to host an event in San Francisco where it is expected
to shine a light on its strategy for serving big clients.

Industry sources expect BlackBerry to outline tie-ups with
carriers and service providers that will be co-marketing its
BlackBerry Enterprise platform, and will watch the event to get
clues to how the company plans to kick-start revenue growth.

Talk of activist interest boosts Wal-Mart call volume ahead of earnings

NEW YORK, Nov 11 (Reuters) – Traders placed bullish bets on
Wal-Mart Stores Inc’s options on Tuesday, the third
trading day in a row, amid rumors that the retailer could face
activist pressure to spin off its Sam’s Club division.

Activity in Wal-Mart’s call options soared, with the
combined call volume Friday through Tuesday rising to 145,000
contracts, making it the busiest three consecutive days for the
calls this year, according to Trade Alert data.

Hedging Chinese stocks pricey as volatility fears persist

NEW YORK (Reuters) – China’s uncertain economic path has made investors cautious, and they are stepping into the options market to protect against the chance of big swings in individual names.

While U.S. stocks shrugged off a mid-October pullback, options market data for the last couple of weeks shows traders have continued to bid up the cost of hedging losses in Chinese stocks.
