In the big money world of sports-related marketing, Michael Vick is suddenly persona non grata.
First Reebok suspended sales of the National Football League quarterback’s jersey, then Nike followed suit, saying it would not sell any more Vick products at its company-owned retail stores.
The decision by Nike and Reebok, two of the largest sports apparel makers, comes as Vick has been accused of sponsoring a dog fighting operation. Vick, who plays for the Atlanta Falcons, has pleaded not guilty to federal charges related to the dog fighting operation.
Without Nike and Reebok, Vick products will be harder to find. But others appear to be stepping up to fill the marketing void. On eBay, bids are going at $14.99 for a t-shirt that reads: “Dogfighting is NOT a VICKtimless Crime”.
