Going green for the retail image

October 1, 2007

green.jpgRetailers are adopting more environmentally friendly practices, in large part to keep their images shiny, a new survey of retail CFOs found.

Two-thirds of CFOs at leading U.S. retailers say their company is actively involved in “green” practices, and 44 percent of those said they have spent more money on these practices inĀ  the past two years, according to the survey by accounting and consulting company BDO Seidman.

Why go green? When asked to identify the greatest motivator for their company to pursue environmentally friendly practices, two-thirds of the CFOs cited the company’s corporate image. Tax breaks were cited by 16 percent and 10 percent cited city or state zoning regulations, BDO Seidman said.

The findings are part of the most recent BDO Seidman Retail Compass Survey, which examines the opinions of 140 chief financial officers.
