Toys “R” Us gives the Vespa a child-like update

vespa2.jpgToys “R” Us is putting its own, child-like twist on the Vespa scooter for the holiday’s this year.

The retailer is rolling out the $229.99 Razor Daisy Pocket Mod as part of its exclusive holiday toy lineup.

And despite a tough economic climate for many consumers, Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Sean McGowan said its relatively high price won’t deter shoppers.

”Even in good times the market is pretty slim for parents who are going to spend that kind of money on it,” McGowan said. But “the people who are going to be in that market anyway aren’t feeling the pinch.”

The motor scooter – which can cruise at up to 15 mph – bears a striking resemblance to the Vespa, which first appeared in Italy in 1946 as a cheap mode of transportation amid the ruins of post-World War II Europe.

“It’s beautifully engineered. The price value is great. It’s sort of that next generation of technology,” independent toy industry consultant Christopher Byrne said.

The bike is battery-powered and is meant for riders between the ages of 12 and 18. The retailer also named the scooter as one of its “Fabulous 15″ hot toys for the 2007 holiday season.
