Is Starbucks’ Vivanno the next Frappuccino?
Starbucks stores around the United States are quietly preparing to roll out a new line of smoothies, called Vivanno, next week.
Some stores have even started a countdown for customers. In at least four coffee shops in Los Angeles and Chicago on Friday, chalkboards announced that Vivanno Nourishing Blends smoothies would be available in just four days.
Starbucks officials wouldn’t say anything more about the smoothies, but the in-store signs pretty much said it all, including that the drinks would come in orange-mango-banana and banana-chocolate flavors.
Could Vivanno be the breath of fresh air Starbucks needs to turn itself around? In 10 years, will “Vivanno” be as iconic a word as “Frappuccino?”
You’ve got four days to mull that over before you can taste them for yourself.

I doubt that the smoothies will live up to the frappuccino in anyway other than price. I remortgaged the crib so I can give one to my wife for our wedding anniversary on monday!
Looking forward to checking them out!
I’m a starbucks employee and I’ve tried both, the orange mango banana blend is better in my opinion. It’ll be interesting to see how well this is received by customers
My fiance works at a Starbucks and made me a Vivanno, though I altered it by taking out the chocolate and adding hazelnut syrup. It was REALLY good! If I can alter the drink everytime, not just when my fiance makes it, I will be addicted to this drink. YUMMMMMMMM!!!!!
I’m interested to know why you would use a photo in which “Vivanno” is misspelled in one of the ad boards.
I work at a Starbucks in Ruston, LA and I can’t really say I’m too thrilled with the drink. The way we make it as is, I find there’s too much protein powder and not enough flavor. For customers out there who are interested in this drink, feel free to tweak as much as you like – ask for less or more protein, more or less juice or milk, etc…
As far as comparing it to the Frappuccino, I honestly don’t think the Vivanno will be as big of a drink or pull Starbucks out of the slump we’re in. I really wish we would get back to basics for now and focus on the drinks we already have.
Also, to my fellow partners, is this drink not a hassle to make or what? If your store uses fresh bananas, consider yourself tremendously lucky because frozen bananas slices are utterly impossible to break up once frozen. I won’t even go into detail how long it takes to make the drink. It’s ok if you don’t have many customers, but if your store is as busy as ours (and with customers who add Splenda to everything) making the drink is a very taxing process.
Viviano is spelled incorrectly in both boards.
Orange Mango Banana? Ill just being having mango thank you.
why would i buy a smoothie from starbucks when i can get more variety and a better smoothie elsewhere? it’ll be hilarious if, a decade from now, starbucks stops serving coffee altogether.
Last time I checked Starbucks was a coffee shop, not a smoothie shop. So what do I think about the Vivanno? A corporate tactic to get back the money and customers they lost when the idiots at headquarters screwed things up after Howard left. I loved what Starbucks stood for and I’m disappointed to hear it stooping as low as this. This is just as ridiculous as McDonald’s selling iced coffee.
Just tried one… the chocolate banana. Pretty good. tastes like a protein shake (in fact has whey protein powder in it). As “iconic” as the frappuccino? I doubt it. But its good nonetheless.
Starbucks may have lucked out with the timing of this.
A new study showed that athletes who consumed carbohydrates and drank caffeine had 66 per cent more glycogen in their muscles four hours after working out, versus athletes who consumed carbohydrates alone.
This is a good thing for all athletes.
I blogged on the science behind this here – http://healthhabits.wordpress.com/2008/0 7/15/mmmmm-coffee/
I am going to try one today (post-workout) and see how they taste.
Just tried the Orange Mango Banana… didn’t know today was the smoothie’s first day until I got home to google and find out if there were more then just the two flavors. (Okay, so today was my first visit to a Starbuck’s in probably 6-9 months… I’m not up on news and I went through the drive through today.)
Yum.!.!.!
Planning to try the Banana Chocolate next as I noticed on the sign board that it has more protein.
Again, my opinion. Yum!
I tried the Banana Chocolate one today and was really impressed. I like its simplicity, taste, and nutrition. It’s not nearly as heavy or thick as a smoothie from Smoothie King, etc. I will likely be often replacing my Java Chip Light Frappuccino with one of these.
i’ve been a manager at Starbucks for 4 year, and this drink is the biggest pain in the ass!
Starbucks is a COFFEE shop, not a smoothie bar.
i hope this drink fails miserably in my store, because i loathe making it. too complicated, tastes bland. thumbs down from me.
I like the mango one better, but next time i’ll ask for less protein powder and a shot of sryup to sweeten it up, its kinda bland right now. Or i’ll have them substitute the orange mango juice to strawberry juice.
i like the mango one, its good. i saw madonna carrying one today in NYC. U know it will be a hit if she has one.
I sent this to Starbucks. Thought some may enjoy.
I am letting you know you have lost yet one more customer. As my wife and I have enjoyed your decaf mocha frappuccino over the years we were quite surprised when we went to our local Starbucks and learned that they are no longer available. The excuse we heard was something about a new drink is being introduced. As we can only drink decaf beverages we turned around and walked out. We decided right then that Starbucks has lost us as a customer including all the hot coffee drinks we enjoy. Upon reflection it comes to a surprise that you would take a decaffeinated drink that is enjoyed by many, from parents concerned about the amount of caffeine their children have in their day-to-day lives to those that can not have decaf due to health reasons. It appears that this is another example of you losing touch with your customers.
As you have made a business decision to drop a well liked drink we have made a decision to take our business elsewhere. If we find you change your mind we may consider returning.
I’m sorry you went into what sounds like a poor Starbucks location. The decaf Fappuccinos aren’t a thing of the past. I made at least 5 today. Nothing will ever take the Frappuccino in regular or decaf away from our customers. If you love them- maybe give another store a shot? It frustrates me too when I know one store to the next is inconsistent and I do my best to keep it consistent and enjoyable. The Vivanno drinks are actually pretty good too when personalized how you want.
i had a small sample today. they decked out the place – signs, banners, even the servers had new aprons and t-shirts! the drink was actually pretty decent…it tastes pretty good. but when i go to starbucks i go for the coffee, the caffeine. i’ll go to jamba juice to get my smoothies.
Pictures and more about this:

The Vivannos are great! To the people who are interested in knowing “why you chose picture with a mispelled word”… don’t be such a pest. To the people who left Starbucks over the decaf frappuccino…it’s isn’t all locations. And the creme frappuccino’s don’t have caffine. They never did. The double chocolately chip is awesome… made with a creme base.. the caramel frappuccino made with creme base is awesome too. Give it a shot! (errr… well not a shot, since you want decaf.) ha ha
In reply to “ummmm”
Decaf Frappuccinos have been officially discontinued by Starbucks. As of today, 7/15, no stores should be serving them. As you mentioned, consistency is important– so you shouldn’t be serving these drinks anymore.
For those who love Decaf Frappuccinos, I’m sorry. I suggest trying a creme-based Frappuccino with a decaf shot of espresso. For example, you could order your decaf mocha Frappuccino as a single shot, decaf, mocha creme Frappuccino. It should taste somewhat similar.
To the rowrowrow, it is time for you to move on! It is a great product that will make a difference to our company. Same time as any other blended beverage. Sad to see managers on this site. Very very unprofessional!!!!
I’m drinking one now (the banana chocolate one)… it’s actually pretty good. Not nearly as sweet as the frappucino, but filling and tasty. The other thing is that you can actually drink the whole cup, i.e. it’s not half ice like the frappucino!
can someone explain what is a (decaf) frap base and how different it is from a cream base and why a shot of decaf added to the cream base one would make it almost the same and not exactly the same? I just but them not make them.
I just tasted samples of both and ordered the chocolate banana with a shot of espresso. Other than the fresh banana, this is a very poor imitation of a fruit smoothie. It is pasty with powder and only fair taste, although probably a lot healthy with fewer calories than their frapaccinos. I’m going to stick with Planet Smoothie for healthy real fruit smoothies with outstanding flavor and stick with just their coffee at SBs.
I have had two banana chocolate Vivanno’s and they are quite good. Will probably get those now rather than Frappachinos. Less calories and better for you.
How about pineapple/banana/cocoanut? That would be good!
I am a manager for another company licensed to sell Starbucks beverages. These Vivanno Nourishing Blends are selling like crazy at our location. We are seeing a 25% increase in our customer counts for the first days of the Vivanno launch. We are vastly exceeding our sales projections for this product. Why? Because we are straightforward with our customers; if you want a super sweet delicious dessert, stick with the fraps. If you are looking for something healthy that tastes good and will keep you full for a while, the vivannos are your thing. Like all Starbucks product, everyone loves their own customization – maybe you want less protein, maybe an extra banana, maybe soy milk or 5 pumps of caramel syrup, whatever. A quick conversation with the Barista will get you a drink made just the way you like it. (I like the banana chocolate made with espresso and soy.) They aren’t as sweet as some of Jamba Juice’s fruit concoctions, but they also have substantially less sugar and way more protein. If you are a die hard coffee lover, stick with the mocha or vanilla latte you like. There is no reason that this beverage should take anything away from customers who prefer the pre-existing drinks we will continue to carry. This product allows us to reach a whole new customer who is health savvy and doesn’t care for coffee. As far as variety goes, I am sure that if these are successful, SBUX will launch additional flavors in the very near future. To the SBUX manager who hates them: if you hope they fail and can’t be bothered to make them, our company will be happy to pick up your sales (and your bonus too). While you complain about a decrease in sales and customer counts, our shop increased sales last year and will do so again this year. Get behind your product!
here’s a pretty hilarious youtube about the vivanno. this guy is obviously a fan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oajXKguvJ KA
I actually work at a fairly popular Starbucks in Tampa, FL and thought I would do a little surfing to see what people are thinking about our new drinks. I’m not surprised to see a variety of opinions.. Afterall, that tends to happen no matter what Starbucks does. However, I had to comment on ‘rowrowrow’. I’m fairly certain it’s time for you to find a job you actually care about. It’s very discouraging for me, being a shift, to see a store manager belittling the company. Very unprofessional indeed.
As for the Vivanno’s, they’re definitely worth a shot. I’ll admit, I do a bit of tweaking to the original recipe, but they have served as a decent meal replacement to tide me over till dinner since the second we introduced them.
I just tried the Vivanno – Orange-Mango-Banana today and it was a really big hit! Really flavorful and nutritious — I ordered mine with soymilk instead of milk as I don’t like dairy products and it was very creamy. I was surprised at how much flavor there was — didn’t check if there is sugar in it, but it has a lot less calories than the blended frozen drinks like the Frappuccino with added syrups and at about the same price. It’s definitely going to be one I order a lot as I go to Starbucks most every day and sooo happy they have another alternative to change things around some — I just hope they will keep the Vivanno on the menu.
Good move Starbucks!! Wish you the best!
Orange-Mango-Banana – excellent !! Smooth, creamy, not heavy and loaded w/ice; nutritious treat! Thanks.
I work at Starbucks as well and I think they are completely flavorless without some much needed tweaking. I get the Banana Chocolate with strawberry syrup and an add shot of espresso, and the Orange Mango Banana with strawberry as well. The BCB is good with added hazlenut, which was also mentioned. But the protein powder has whey in it..if anyone’s allergic..
Oh and to “Lost Customer” decaf coffees and espressos and frapuccinos actually do contain caffeine, albeit less. The decaf fraps are made with fresh decaf coffee rather than the powdered version we use for the fraps and the frap lights. And actually depending on the Starbucks, it’s still made. As I work in Los Angeles, we still offer it. If you can’t have caffeine then you can always just order a cream base frapuccino with mocha syrup which is completely caffiene free. You can actually put any syrup into the cream base fraps and most are pretty good, and this is what we recommend to children and people who can’t have caffiene.
We went to Starbucks today. I was craving my usual decaf Java chip frap and was very disappointed to hear that it is no longer being offered. My friend usually gets the decaf mocha frap, and of course that is no longer carried either. We can’t have caffine and I don’t care to substitute with something I don’t want in the first place. You just lost two regular customers that buy there several times a week.
i was very interested in trying one after reading the sign at starbucks last week…much to my dismay it is nothing like a frappucino!! simply disgusting!!
My daughter and I would get the decaf mocha faps about once a week. We are sooooo disappointed. Starbucks, kids are your future – don’t shut them out of being loyal lifelong customers. Would it really be so tough to bring the decaf fraps back?
In Reply to chuck.
Um I don’t know what your talking about but we still do sell DECAF FRAPPUCCINOS. I’ve sold like 10 of them today. We discontinued another drink but not the decaf one. It sells like crazy over here. And as for the Vivanno drink, some people dislike the mocha banana one a lot. The orange mango ones sell more then the chocolate ones.
Myself and my husband also cannot have caffeine and were huge fans of decaf frappuccino.
Ironically, I had stopped going to the Sbux I had been to every day of my life for 6 years (and where I got to know all the baristas, went to parties with them, had them over to my house, etc) after an employee was unforgivably rude to me over my politely, and with a big smile, asking her to add sugar to my Americano *before* it was poured over ice. All kinds of eye-rolling, loud sighs, SLAMMING the drinks down on the counter, etc. followed. I was stunned at how blatantly her little display was. I spoke to the (new) manager and he apologized and gave me 2 free drink coupons.
I didn’t go back for 3 weeks. When I finally gave in one Sunday morning, lo and behold the same manager and same barista were working. The barista saw me walk in and walked up to the manager, whispered and giggled in his ear, he laughed, and then they both exuberantly high-fived each other. As I was standing at the counter waiting, the manager turned toward the barista again and said, in a deeply sarcastic voice “Sweetie? Maybe you should take this opportunity to take out the garbage.” She looked at him and winked and laughed and walked away. I guess I understand why 80% of the staff left when this new manager had been at this location for six weeks.
Anyway, back to the irony: all of the above happened about six months ago. I have not been to that Sbux one single time in that six months. This last weekend I had been working in the garden for a few hours and was hot and tired and all I could think about was a Decaf Mocha Frappuccino. So I gave in again and went to Sbux. And guess what? They had discontinued my favorite drink!! Now, thank god, I have no reason at all to patronize a “coffee” shop that protects abusive and hostile baristas, discontinues beloved classic beverages in order to “make more room in the fridge” as I was told, etc.
I guess I’ll take that $80/week I was spending at Starbucks (that’s right, my drink + my husband’s drink = $11/day) and go to the fantastic INDEPENDENT coffee shop across the street. Sorry, Starbucks. I was loyal to you for years. No wonder your company is failing.
Like I said before….not ALL Decaf Frappuccino’s are discontinued. We haven’t discontinued it yet and we still have the Vivanno drinks. We discontinued another drink that barely sells. Some of the baristas need to get there facts straight before telling customers that ALL starbucks will be discontinuing this drink.
Your making us all look bad with inconsistant answers…
Well I have to say there certainly are a lot of different opinions about the vivanno. If Starbucks wasn’t sampling it I probably would have never ordered it. But I kept walking in to order my venti non fat latte and kept trying the samples and I have say…I LOVE IT! I’m addicted. So..yes..it’s not a frappucino but I have to tell you…I’m glad because those are way to sweet for me. I was looking for something not quite so sweet, healthy, refreshing, filling and somewhat balanced with good flavor and this has it all! I can down one so fast it’s scary! I don’t adjust it all and I prefer the Orange Mango Banana though the other one is not bad either! I was especially excited there was no added sugar and NO ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS! I feel so great after I drink one! Now..I order the Vivanno and still get my latte at the same time…how bad is that! I’ve doubled my spending! That has to be a great move on Starbucks part! It’s good to offer different drinks…not everything tastes the same to everyone!
I was also a very loyal decaf/light frappucino customer.. usually buy at least 2 or 3 a week for the last several years.. many stores would make the decaf/light mix, but not all.. (that was fine as I could compromise a little..) but I’ve been to 4 different stores in the LA area the past 2 weeks and all of them discontinued the decaf.
I made an effort to ask 3/4 store barista’s what the general reaction has been to the discontinuation of decaf fraps, and all have said there has been a tremendous amount of dissapointment. One guy said they can’t understand why they would do this as sometimes up to 1/2 of their customers after 3 pm that ordered fraps were decaf.
I also wrote an email to SB and told them they lost a very loyal customer.
p.s. I tried the banana-choc vivanno and it was not something I’d likely order again… not horrible, but for the price and taste, not worth it to me.
rowrowrow —if you dont like what your store has to make then find a new job…I own quite a few shares in SBUX and no wonder I am loosing money if there are managers like you!! I have tried the drinks and they are pretty good, I prefer coffee drinks but these drinks could bring in coustomers who normally would not be in Starbucks.
Attention everyone who actually thinks Starbucks/Sbux employees, etc give a crap about what you think about their store…..WE DONT CARE. I used to work at SBux and had to deal with complainers like you every single day…I’m sorry, but when I have a line out BOTH doors, it is kind of annoying for you to modify every single stupid thing about your drink just so you can call it out in front of other patrons and feel special – clearly, you can stir in your own stupid Splenda when your drink is hot…and, if you ask for HALF of a Splenda, I am still going to give you the whole packet – do you REALLY think I have the time or actually CARE enough to measure it out for you? NO. Oh, and by the way, when you are a jerk to me day after day about your drink being “too hot” or “not enough whip cream” when CLEARLY you got Skim Milk (whats the point??!!) I am going to give you Whole Milk and no sugar free anything, just to spite you. When you are a jerk to us day after day, WHY would you think we care about your stupid modifications? WE DONT. Because, quite frankly, we DONT need your business – if you want to take your money somewhere else, PLEASE DO – and TAKE YOUR ATTITUDE TOO, WHILE YOU’RE AT IT!!!!! NEITHER is needed at Starbucks. Oh, and by the way, maybe if you spent your $80/week on a personal trainer instead of fattening and sugary drinks, you wouldn’t be so damn FAT.
Wow..that last posting points out the need to switch some Starbucks employees to decaf! Unhappy workers/ people will always remain unhappy- fire them from your life.
Starbucks needs to get back to basics- quality coffee, shorter lines, nice servers, less noisy stores, and healthy food. Peet’s- tastier and quieter (free cup w/ 1/2 lb purchase) ; Dutch Brothers (local)- tastier, faster (drive thru) and nice servers (smoothies yummy!); locals shops cheaper. Jamba juice is tastier and will change to offer healthier alternatives. Store closures and smoothies will help the bottom line. Add microbrews to the menu and people will flock in. Come to Portland, Oregon…it’s a great place in the summer.
The Vivanno got all this publicity, so my husband and I had to try it. Of course we read that there were free coupons available so we asked for them at our local Starbucks. No coupons, we were told, but they made us two small samples of the Chocolate Banana Vivanno. I was shocked when I finally placed why it tasted so familiar…..it’s like drinking a Slimfast (girls you remember those, right?)…but worse…with the taste of an overpowering banana. I love a frozen chocolate-dipped banana, but this Vivanno…..ugh. If this is one step toward recovery I have a feeling Starbucks will continue its descent. Personally after talking with so so many people in NYC where I live I tend to think that management has their heads in the wrong area; diversity isn’t the answer, the answer is the price. By giving late afternoon discounts only if you’ve bought a morning coffee you defeat the goal of trying to bring the masses into local Starbucks. It’s the reason Dunkin Donuts is doing so well….in these economic times you need volume of purchase because those who used to be able to afford a Starbucks coffee have now fled toward a more moderately priced product. The Starbucks cache/status quotient was on its way to oblivion once it was made available ground in bags ready to take home in places like WalMart and at your local supermarket. No one feels ‘cool’ anymore just because there’s a logo on the cup. Bring the price down and they will come, I say….
They did actually discontinue the decaf Frap (it’s finally mentioned on the Wikipedia for Frappucino). What a horrible decision by Starbucks! I am quite frankly not stupid enough to go to SBUX everyday, but I did enjoy a decaf frap after a nice dinner about once per week. Last week, I was informed that the only drink I would possibly purchase at this place was discontinued. Then they wonder why market share is shrinking forcing them to close stores. HUGE MISTAKE!!! But what do I care, lately Starbucks employees and stores have been getting more deplorable and disgusting anyways. Time to try a different guilty pleasure.
I agree with Richard. I only drink decaf and liked the frappucino for a treat instead of a milkshake. I’ll start going back to Baskin Robbins or Ben & Jerry’s for my treat. (And I have a hard time believing making a decaf frappucino is more trouble than making a smoothie.)
LUV IT, IT’S DELICIOUS!!! ORANGE MANGO BANANA: 16 G PROTEIN, WHOLE BANANA, ORANGE MANGO STUFF VIT C GREAT FOR BREAKFAST ON GO! MY NEW DRINK OF CHOICE!!!!
I like the idea of the smoothie. Especially since I don’t have a smoothie shop nearby. Also, i’ve started adding the protein in my fraps, and VERY happy about that.
“As my wife and I have enjoyed your decaf mocha frappuccino over the years we were quite surprised when we went to our local Starbucks and learned that they are no longer available. The excuse we heard was something about a new drink is being introduced. As we can only drink decaf beverages we turned around and walked out.”
The mocha has about 90grams of caffeine to begin with, so if you thought for a second you were drinking a decaf drink, or are that adamant about drinking decaf drinks then you deserve this disservice.
Do your homework. Chocolate has caffeine. Every “decaf” mocha you had was equivalent to a straight shot of caffeinated espresso.
It is interesting to hear people talking about how they can’t have caffeine-but they are still consuming it. What people don’t realize is that there is still caffeine in a decaffinated drink-it just has less in it. Therefore, it isn’t so much a question of not taking it in, but limiting it.
Still, I understand the desire to limit the intake-especially in the late afternoon. It’s bad when you need a frap fix and ending up staying up all night because of it!
The Vivanno is vile. It tastes like a nasty egg, and is a bit chalky. It is not worth the nutritional benefits…and it is definetly not the “new frappuccino.” If you are a brave soul and are willing to try, then I salute you, my friend!
