"Most companies launch products and then sell them. Jobs didn’t do that with Apple. He let the public know what he was going to sell them, how it solved their problems, and that they could pre-order the product online."

I think you would find that Apple in general, has one of, if not the the shortest announcement to sales channel trends in the industry. Apple has a very strict "no comment" policy about unannounced products. Don't confuse consumer excitement in advance of an product keynote with pre-selling. 90% of the time when Jobs announced a product onstage he would also followup with "and that product is available today". The iPhone 4S was announced a week before it was shipping.

"This is why Apple is the largest company in the world."

It's not, actually. From time to time of late it has had the largest market capitalization, but in terms of employees, revenue, locations, it's just not.

119th by revenue

35th on the Fortune 500

Doesn't register on list of top employers

Steve's passion for the Mac helped all of us. It also shows that the purpose of the corporation was not "to make money for stockholders," but to make Apple computers--through thick and thin.
