Football is clearly no laughing matter if the lack of decent April Fools is anything to go by. April 1, traditionally the time for the media to let their imaginations run wild and print every kind of spoof story, has hardly raised a smile so far.
The People newspaper has a short story about West Ham bringing 39-year-old former defender Neil Ruddock out of semi-retirement at LA Profoil to help their bid to avoid relegation.
Turning to blogs, the only one I could find was at El Mas Grande which has a has story about the two River players Juan Pablo Carrizo and Fernando Belluschi being snapped up by Juventus on the cheap. It’s not true but not funny either (unless there’s a joke in there I’ve missed).
Bayern Munich’s website has a piece about the discovery of a pair of boots belonging Georg Schwarzenbeck but it’s hardly one to get the pulses racing either.
There must be more kicking about and if you’ve found any from this year, or if you have a favourite from the past, please let us know.
I’d like something to match the classic from the Guardian a few years ago which had an interview with Paul Gascoigne, the England footballer, and his “dad” Bamber Gascoigne, who for those who don’t know was the presenter of a high-brow quiz programme.
The line I recall was “Paul” complaining about “Bamber” never letting him watch the darts on TV. Does anyone have a link to it?
