Familiar story as Real sack Capello

Fabio Capello gestures before Real Madrid's recent Real Madrid have sacked coach Fabio Capello, less than a fortnight after he led the team to their first Spanish league title in four years.

It’s a familiar story to anyone who has followed Real and our Spanish sports correspondent Simon Baskett writes here about his latest bout of deja vu.

Real did well to overhaul Barcelona over the closing weeks of the season but the Bernabeu crowd remained unimpressed with the team’s laboured playing style and sporting director Predrag Mijatovic confirmed that the lack of good football was behind the decision.

Curiously, this is the second time Capello has left Real after winning the league title in his first season in charge. Last time that happened, Real went on to win the European Cup under a German coach in the following season. By all accounts another German, Bernd Schuster is set to take over this time as they look for history to repeat itself. Is the relatively inexperienced Schuster the right man for the job?

i’d have thought wenger would be a better bet than schuster, wouldn’t he? or maybe that’s the plan — schuster for a year and then the arsenal man when his contract is up.

It’s farcical. I am at a loss to understand why Calderón cannot see that this is an extremely risky decision that could land him on the street this time next year if it backfires. Continuity would have been the sensible course to follow. Capello managed to unite a disparate set of egos into something resembling a team with spirit and attitude. Schuster (if it is indeed he) will have his work cut out to do anywhere near as well. He may well have what it takes, but he hasn’t shown it before…

Seems like everyone thinks that saking Capello is a mistake… at least that’s what most bloggers in elpais.com say.

well, can schuster take the pressure and control madrid’s stars? that’s the issue now..

It might turn out to be a good move. Barcelona going for Rijkaard looked a bit desperate at first but he did pretty well. Schuster will probably have just as much authority at real, if not more.
