After Fabio Capello’s snub of David Beckham, attention turns to another big name player sweating over his international future.
Juventus striker Alessandro Del Piero was dropped by Italy coach Roberto Donadoni following an uninspiring performance in September’s 0-0 draw with France and hasn’t featured since. Donadoni even hinted the 33-year-old was getting too old for international football.
Juve boss Claudio Ranieri also began to leave Ale out towards the end of last year, but since Christmas it has been a different story.
Del Piero has rolled back the years with some excellent displays, leading many to call for his inclusion in the squad to face Portugal in a friendly next week.
Judging by the host of replies to our blog about Del Piero in November, he has a hefty fan club.
Apart from Luca Toni, Italy’s attacking options are not obvious, especially with Donadoni preferring three up front. Surely there’s space for a little maestro?

Del Piero is great player. But it is up to what is required for the championships, not the short term. I think he has had a great career there is no need to be sentimental to him.
- Posted by Worby Zecothe italy squad as with any other national team should be picked on form. in the past it could be argued that he has been picked when not up to par, but now he is in great form, scoring and creating goals, and is also visibly fitter and possibly quicker. he is full of confidence and he should be picked for the championships
