Maradona up to his old tricks

Feb 23, 2008 11:08 EST

Italian tennis player Potito Starace has lambasted former idol Diego Maradona for insulting him from the stand during his quarter-final loss to Argentina’s David Nalbandian in the Buenos Aires Open.

Maradona insulted me as soon as the match began,” said Starace, a fan of Maradona’s former team Napoli.

“Diego made me lose my head, I went to the umpire and I said to him: ‘Either you throw him out or I’ll go bash a racket in his teeth’.”

Now why didn’t England keeper Peter Shilton think of that between the ‘Hand of God’ and one the greatest goals ever scored in the Mexico ‘86 quarter-final?

At least Diego’s still passionate about his country…

The shame of letting one persons insults get to him like that. He needs to have a thicker skin if he wants to compete with the big boys on the circuit.

Mr shilton is also a bit of a hero in the game. However his comments about maradona do not help, anybody who is still idolised the way maradona is by kids should act in a more responsable way,his behaviour will only have a negative effect on the way youngsters behave,as they tend to even more than before follow others lead rather than deciding for them self what is righ and what is wrong.

I can kind of see both sides of this argument. On one side, Maradona is being smart and getting under Starace’s skin, it did the job and aided his fellow Countryman’s defeat of the Italian.
However, on the other side of the coin, Tennis’ etiquette from the fans has different expectations and such abuse is usually dealt with.
It is an unwritten rule, perhaps because it was Maradona nothing was done yet something surely should have been.
