You really can't separate the two. So, if you believe that football is about winning, you really have to admire the bravado of Ronaldo. As such, I think that he is a much better candidate for future United captain than Rooney (recently suggested by Capello for England). Rooney is too romantic. He still flies off the handle. Ronaldo has the steely mind and knows how to both win and rub it in.
