Vlog on the pitch - was it a penalty for Liverpool?

Was Ryan Babel pushed or did he just slip? Yet again vlogmeister Owen Wyatt and Deputy Sports Editor Jon Bramley disagree on the key moment which sent Liverpool through to the Champions League semi-finals.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was livid with the decision, especially after his side were denied a strong penalty shout in the first leg.

We make no apologies for over-blogging on this fantastic game (see a reaction piece and Mike Collett’s musings). Leave us your thoughts on whichever blog or better still record your own video response, post it up to youtube or wherever tagged “vlog on the pitch” and if we like it we’ll put them up here.

i think it was about as much of a pen as the one steve gerrard got in the final against milan three years back, ie. not really, but it’ll soon be forgotten amid the drama.

Arsenal were unlucky with the penalty calls, but it’s great for the Liverpool supporters. Arsenal would have done well to put themselves in a position where a bit of bad luck wouldn’t have sent them crashing out, i.e., building up a multiple-goal lead. There’s a job for the Arsenal manager: assemble a side that can win decisively.

That run from Walcott was fantastic.

Nice one Wyatt - completely correct today, after yesterdays ‘Dirty’ Sanchez witch hunt. The difference between this week’s pen decision and last week’s was that Babel was heading through on goal and Hleb was going nowhere. It’s much easier for the ref to give a pen if the player who goes down is actually threatening to score (Babel) rather than heading into a dead end (Hleb).

What’s the correct pronunciation of Theo Walcott though? I’m certain i heard Wyatt say ‘Tao’?!

I said Teo Walcott - loosing the th - I am glad you agree with me today Ben. Monday’s vlog was not a Sanchez witch Hunt - I just said it like it is.

whether it was a penalty or not does not mean a thing…at the end of the day, as i pedicted in an earlier vlog, arsenal only went as far as the overperformances of phillipe senderos could take them…he was at fault for the first two goals and cost them the game..

“If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs then yours is the earth and everything in it”. In the seconds after Adebayor drew Arsenal level to put his side within touching distance of a semi-final berth my mind turned to these famous words of Rudyard Kipling. Would a young Arsenal side be able to control their emotions in the cauldron like atmosphere of Anfield, the place where so many European Giants have been put to the sword over the years?

Within seconds we had our answer, a rush of blood from Kolo Toure gave Steven Gerrard make amends for the heartache of 1989, Michael Thomas et al. As a boy who cried in his father’s arms some 19 years before, there were no tears for Wenger’s fledging stars last night, those fickle footballing gods shined on the Reds. For along will this continue….we can only dare to dream.

Am I the only one who posts on here that can’t help but feel the vlogmaster Wyatt is a blatant Fulham fan?

Consider the import of the two games, neither warranted a penalty call. To decide any game so wonderful with a penalty call is ludicrous. But there are too many of them. One thing that might lead to more fairness — rule that the player fouled must take the penalty. I’ve never understood the allowance of the supershooter in these instances.

Toure should have known better than to push Babel and bait the penalty. On hindsight, he should have just ran beside Babel and put pressure. Emotions and the atmosphere set the situation up ripe for a penalty.

In all fairness, if there was ever such thing as a rugby-style TV referee, this wouldn’t have been a penalty and the Kuyt incident wouldn’t have been a penalty also.
But such is the drama of football. We don’t want it to be too sanitised even at the expense of our favourite team.

Now, it’s time to concentrate on Liverpool’s match against Chelsea and something tells me, this time my team will not be so lucky…

Arsene Wenger has unique vision in that he either sees any contentious incident that goes against Arsenal as a cut and dry bad decision by the referee or if the contentious decision goes for Arsenal he never sees a thing.

D kuyt incidence deserved a penalty call but like what ben said hleb wasn’t threatning to score but babel was.I’m happy I made it to the semis cos I almost thought I was going to crash out after the two looses to masielle and besiktas. Now we are going to play chelsea our potentialchampions league baby I’m sure its going to a easy task.I just want benitez to review our 2 previous premiership encounters and creat a fomidable side and get a 3 unreplied goals at anfield against the second leg.Up Reds
