Struggling Henry slips down the pecking order

April 30, 2008

A dejected Henry

According to a poll on Facebook, strikers Nicolas Anelka and Karim Benzema are favourites to be in France’s 23-man squad for Euro 2008 in Switzerland and Austria.

95.8 per cent of the Facebook addicts who drew their own list think Anelka should be included, 95.7 believe Benzema also has to be in the squad for June’s tournament.

Thierry Henry only comes in third with 94.3 per cent.

OK, there’s not much of a difference but a few months ago the Barcelona striker would have easily topped the charts.

Since he left Arsenal, Henry has made excuses for his poor form: he’s too far from his daughter since his divorce and he has been asked to play on the left flank.

In Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final second leg with Manchester United, he came on as a substitute but made little impression as Barca bowed out.

What do you think of the Henry conundrum?

I’ve never been a fan of his but I do respect Henry’s ability. I would say that he created more chances in the brief cameos he had against United in the two legs than Eto’o or Iniesta did. Perhaps Barca have come to view him as an aging super-sub much the way that Henrik Larsson and Del Piero were used at times in the last couple of seasons. When I saw they were bringing on Gudjohnsen with 10 minutes left, I felt the game was up. Gudjohnsen has not fit in with the style Barca likes to play and he probably needs to leave in the summer.

Back to Henry, I do agree with the point that playing out on the left flank is not his best position these days. He generally played a a more central position for Arsenal with the freedom to drift out to the left to open the defence. Coming in from the left and facing a packed defence does not give him much to work with.

Henry has always been a bit of a moody player. I think he loved the style he was allowed to play at Arsenal, and now the team he’s on isn’t built around him, so it is frustrating him. Point being, Thierry Henry is still one of the most talented and explosive players in the world. I think Barca are wrong if they think Henry is like Del Piero or Larsson, he’s only 30. Should be interesting to see what he’s like with France this summer. Can’t wait!

Henry is a class act. His problem, as mentioned above, is that so much of what he has achieved has come from collecting the ball in a central position and drifting out to the flanks, thus cretaing space in the middle for him to expose. It doesn’t work for him the opposite way round.

What bemused me against Manchester United is that Eto’o did absolutely nothing and couldn’t get off the pitch quick enough when he was substituted – Henry could have been deployed in his position far earlier and to greater effect.

Get him back to Arsenal… to provide some much needed fire power for next season.

What Henry in need now is a Champion League Cup. English Clubs are now dominant the European Top Club Championship. I desperately think that Henry should be in Arsenal squad next season. It’s for Henry, for Arsenal ,and for Barcelona.

Henry is the type that used to play in left central striker position but now in Barcelona, Rijkaard ask him to play as a left forward which completely doesn’t fit on him. Henry can score tons of goals but the position just seem like a “assister”.

Henry can be a TREMENDOUS striker again next season. But it’s all depend on the club and himself.

I understand what Henry is saying and I agree that Arsene should bring Henry back to Arsenal, it is clear that he isn’t happy at Barca. I think the decision he made was too hasty, it’s a true saying that the grass isn’t always greener on the otherside.
As an Arsenal fan I would love to see him back, he can pose a threat to the likes of man utd and chelsea. And he can help fire Arsenal to the top of the premier league.

There nothing to say.Henry should return to Arsenal.
