It's the age old problem with Newcastle...expectation. You can understand it, because they've had so many years where it has seemed they've been on the brink of something in the last 12 years. Keegan (1st time) took them to the cusp of greatness then left. After a few years of turmoil with Dalgliesh and Gullit, Sir Bobby took them back to a level again where they could have been a force. Unfortunatly he wasn't given the chance to fulfill his, or the teams potential.

Bringing Keegan back was a mistake. Even he said that they wouldnt break into the top 4 during his time there. It is going to take anyone (barring someone pumping stupid money into a club ala Man city) at least 5-10 years of constant growth before the top 4 are challanged.

Second mistake of Ashley? Creating the circumstances behind Keegans departure. As soon as KK was appointed he was onto a loser, it simply could not have achieved the expectation that was around st james park.

I have to say, Ashley has come in and given his own hard earned cash to try and keep newcastle afloat, to try and stop another 'leeds utd' saga occuring, but the fans forgot all about that, they didnt see the money getting pumped in, as instead of it getting used to bring in superstars, it was busy covering the debts left by underachieving teams of recent years. i feel sorry that ashley has been forced out when you can see he is a true fan. a billionairre wearing a 40 pound top says it all to me. but he has been silly in the amount of power he ripped from keegan, at the end of the day it doesnt matter who is in charge of money, the manager has to have the overall decision in all matters off the club, be it transfers to team selection. Keegan did not have those rights so he had to go.

it then comes down to the favourite son story doesnt it, no matter how much money ashley pumped in, keegan was always the golden boy. if the toon fans had to choose it was always gonna be their hero to stay.

unlucky ashley, hard times
