Barcelona beat Manchester United — your views

May 27, 2009

Barcelona deposed Manchester United as European champions with an outstanding 2-0 victory in the Champions League final at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday.

Samuel Eto’o struck the opener after 10 minutes when he cut in from the right past Nemanja Vidic with surprising ease and his low shot beat United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar at his near post. Xavi cracked a free kick against a United post at the start of the second half before Lionel Messi sealed the win after 70 minutes when he scored with a beautifully timed header from Xavi’s cross.

It was a curiously subdued performance from United, while Barcelona got full value for a performance that was thoroughly professional but hardly brilliant.

Alex Ferguson was content to say the best team won. Do you agree? Let us know in the comments.

Can’t really argue that Barcelona deserved it. United didn’t do anything much once they’d gone behind. And it completes a fantastic season for Barcelona. Congrats.

Shame United were in the final really, wasted the chance to win it again. Think Arsenal would have put up a better show!

Amazing ball control by Barca. I was very concerned that a larger & stronger Man U would physically intimidate Barca. Amazingly, not an issue. I counted over 30 completed passes by Barca at one point. Stadium was singing OLE!!!

Men against boys, anyone? Those words must be sticking in Monsieur Evra’s throat after that display.

After early flashes of brilliance Man United were muted. And rather than blaming the English champions for not playing well, to put it succinctly the Catalan giants just did not allow them.

I’m quite fond Barcelona FC but my hate for Man u is much much much greater. Can you just imagine how happy I am…would have been happier if it was Liverpool inflicting the damage but I’m taking happiness as it comes. Yes, you! Happiness, thank you for living in me.

And who was man of the match? BBC Player Rater gives it to Iniesta, UEFA.com Fan’s Vote gives it to Messi, but the room where I am sitting and watching gives it to Carlos Puyol… who bossed C. Ronaldo through a couple of crunching tackles and almost scored during an imperious performance that anchored a fine Barcelona win.

Hi Julian. Xavi was named man of the match by UEFA… Him and Iniesta together probably deserved it.

I said it before the match that the Barca midfield will outplay Man U. Chelsea had 3 world class midfielders in Lampard, Essien and Ballack and Barca barely escaped defeat. The key is the midfield. Man U apparently had boys in the middle of the park. At least, ten man Arsenal played like men in 2006.

This is what makes this game so beautiful. Barcelona is fantastic, the passing, the defending, the scoring, absolutly brilliant. Every aspiring soccer player should study this game and learn how soccer is played. Viva el Barca

No English team have been so decisively beaten in the EC/CL like Man U today. When they could only beat just one of England’s top four, we should have known. Chelsea gave Barca the fright of their lives and ten Arsenal almost mauled them in 2006, before the ref again! Who was an outstanding midfielder in Man U. Chelsea has 3-4, Arsenal have two creative players in Cesc and Arshavin, Liverpool have Gerarld and Alonso.Man U had just grafters.

[...] Barcelona 2 Manchester United 0. Samuel Eto’o 10, Lionel Messi 70 Thanks for all the comments. New thread going here. Please stop by. From Mark Meadows at the Stadio Olimpico: – - – - Not quite the dream final. [...]

it was a dream final, man U should now a learn a bitter lesson that u dont count ur chickens until they are hatched, all the noise of winning 5 throphies this season is nothing but building castles in the air, bravo to Barca, they are true champions

Very disappointing from Manchester United, if they could have picked themselves up and carried on like the first 10 minutes it would have been a different story. Could see areas were improvement is needed in the squad. Barcelona showed why they are Europes best and a consistent team. Messi and Iniesta were spectacular on the night fuelling Barca’s performance.- From a Man U fan

Not suprised at the result. Barca were truley awesome and played the perfect game. There’s no amount of money could afford the players that barca picked up for penny’s and have groomed in to superstars. Xavi and Iniesta were just brilliant and passed united dizzy. Well deserved.

Stranegly, no one is questioning Sir Alex’s starting line-up and formation, the fatal flaw that led to the disaster. Rooney our of position on the left, Ronaldo out of position as the lone striker, Giggs trampled in midfield by Xavi and Iniesta, Tevez on the bench when he should have been playing alongside Rooney up front form the start. The formation that worked to perfection against Arsenal backfired against Barca because they are a better team than Arsenal and Guardiola read Fergie like an open book. Not even the first 10 minutes can disguise that. And as Mike Collett says, there was an absence in spirit among United’s top players and for me, it raises the issue whether things really are all right in the dressing room. Did the Ronaldo and Tevez soap operas drive a wedge when United could least afford one? If they go, is this an end of an extraordinary three-year spell of success? Will Fergie have top start from scratch like he did after the 2003 season, when Beckham was shown the exit door?

it’s clear that man utd’s tactics heavily depended on them getn e 1st goal.i thnk it was more abt man utd playing awful than barca being that brilliant as its being put

Well Done Barca! Champions of Europe and the better side on the night… But give Man U their due, with such a young squad, in the past 3 seasons they have been consistent[if not the most consistent] in Europe and in England, Fergie has done wonders for Man U and is a true legend, just ask any LFC fan…LOLBarca shouldnt get ahead of themselves, i remember the Glorious Barca team of 2006 [Ronaldhino, deco and co], Rijkaard didnt make a mistake at all…and then in a space of 8 months they lost twice to Real and finished 3rd in la liga [not to mention all the off-the-field problems etc]…They have been awesome this season and a delight to watch but i’ve seen them fall apart all to often in the past…it is the nature of Spanish clubs…lets see if they still “The Record Breaking” Barcelona next year May!

Manchester United looked so feeble and drained out after Messi’s superb header. Barca, without playing well, overwhelmed the English defense. Kudos for Barca, Guardiola, Eto, Messi and Iniesta.

Spain is blue and red (blaugrana) today! Barça is the best team in the world, it was a great match and everyone is Madrid is happy about it!

Dream Final? I don’t think so. To the neutral this was a very dull anti-climax. Neither side played particularly well. Hats off to Barca for the way they took their chances, but as for Man U, they looked jaded and bereft of ideas after the first goal, and never really posed a threat.

Would someone please bring to the attention of british medias the fact that a ManU fan killed intentionally four Barcelona fans driving a bus over douzens of people; ten remained injured. This is to emphasize about all those polemics happened in the last few weeks stigmatizing Rome’s organization of the Final. Many requested it’s replacement with some other city. Even though a ManU fan was stabbed on his leg in Rome none died! My basic question is: how you all can be that arrogant putting in doubt the others while yourselves should just flashback some twenty years to remember what you’re able of.

The only disappointment for me was that the game definitely did not live up to all the hype beforehand. The first ten minutes United controlled the ball, played aggresively and had Barca on their heels. I’m still baffled as to why they were deflated by the first Barca goal. Afterwards and for long stretches of the game they dropped back and allowed Barca to control the ball and impose their style of football. Also, I’m still trying to understand why Park was in the starting lineup and Tevez was on the bench watching the game. That said, Barca was the better team and deserved to win.and Messi? He closed out his best season in Europe by scoring a fantastic goal, with a header, of all ways for him to score.La Liga, Copa Del Rey, Champions League and top goal scorer in the Champions League. All of these things won in one season and at the age of 21.I must ask the following:What did Ronaldo accomplish in his football career when he was 21 years old?

English journalists need to look at themselves in the mirrow and re-assess their knowledge of this game of football. All I was hearing in the English media was how Barcelona stood no chance against the greatest team ever assemble, how Barcelona would not cope with the “pace and power” of EPL players, how English teams were too fact for continental teams, how terrible Barca’s defense was, how Barcelona and Messi could not score against EPL teams, how Man United had too much quality for Barcelona, etc.At the end of the day, it was Man United players who could not keep up with the pace of Barcelona’s passing game. It was Man United who were too exhausted to run at the end of the game.English journalists need to tone down the excessive hype of the EPL…

Im a MAN U supporter & I think the set-up was wrong from the beginning…they should have played 4-4-2 …you cantbeat Barcalona by looking to play ;like them….why was Rooney lost on the left ,what on Earth was Ronlado dong CF,and Giggs in the Midfiled ….Man U practically had no Midfield as Anderson & Carrick were always yards away from the ball, and that put an unknown pressure on the Defence. SAD….what a waste to a glorious performance all season…Man U shown that you can bounce bak on the day from poor decisions in most competitions ,but not yet in UEFA knockout- You just got to get key aspects right from the beginning!!!

[...] Barcelona beat Manchester United in the UEFA cup – 100 million viewers , 230 countries [...]

The 2011 Champions League finals had a rematch between the two giants of football. And again, it was Barcelona that was victorious, clearly, the better team won. Though Manchester had their revenge in the pre season games, I’d say Barcelona still has an edge in terms of attacking football.
