France miss out on being World Cup seeds

December 2, 2009

France, winners in 1998 and finalists last time, will not be one of the eight top seeds at next June’s World Cup.

FIFA said the decision was based on world rankings and had nothing to do with Thierry Henry’s handball.

Just looking at the pots, a very weak-looking group could emerge from Friday’s draw.

South Africa, North Korea, Paraguay, Slovenia anyone?

Then again… Italy, USA, Ivory Coast, France could be a nightmare for all!

It could be a double edged sword for those seeded teams.Don’t forget Portugal !! Especially if they are drawn with England, again !How about England and France in the same group?  /

Thanks Mark, very helpful. Out of curiousity, in your article you’ve mentioned Italy, USA, Ivory Coast and France is a possibility. Does this suggest that you favour Italy as the strongest in Pot 1? My personal oppinion is that we are going to have a surprising winner.

Hi Will, I only chose them for the example because they are world champions. I work here in Milan and most Azzurri fans would probably now agree they are weaker than Spain, Brazil, England, Holland. They’d fancy their chances against the Argentinans and the Germans, even if Germany tend to overperform at tournaments.I dont think many in Italy really think they can win it this time but then few thought they could in 2006…
