Soccer-Moyes braced for ‘impossible’ task at Manchester United

MANCHESTER, England, July 5 (Reuters) – New Manchester United manager David Moyes was under no illusion on Friday that matching the glittering record of his predecessor Alex Ferguson was anything other than “impossible”.

Holding his first news conference since taking over the Old Trafford hot seat, Moyes said he was far from being intimidated at the prospect of the now retired Ferguson watching proceedings from the directors’ box and instead welcomed his presence.

Rooney to stay at United, says Moyes

MANCHESTER, England (Reuters) – New Manchester United manager David Moyes was adamant on Friday that striker Wayne Rooney was not for sale but stopped short of saying the player had changed his mind about wanting to leave.

The issue dominated the Scot’s first news conference since he took over from the retired Alex Ferguson. His predecessor said in May that the England international had asked for a transfer.

Giggs and Neville join United coaching staff

MANCHESTER, England (Reuters) – Midfielder Ryan Giggs has been appointed player-coach at Manchester United and former defender Phil Neville has also joined the backroom staff, the English champions said on Thursday.

Giggs, 39, signed a one-year extension to his playing contract in March and will combine his new duties with being a member of the first-team squad.

LONDON (Reuters) – Second seed Victoria Azarenka called on Wimbledon organisers to examine the state of the grass courts after joining a growing list of players to withdraw from the grand slam because of injury on Wednesday.

The Belarussian fell badly in her match on Monday on what she called a slippery Court One and her knee failed to recover in time for Wednesday’s second-round clash with Flavia Pennetta.
