MANCHESTER, England (Reuters) – Alex Ferguson’s influence at Manchester United will continue past his retirement after the Premier League champions followed his advice and appointed David Moyes as their next manager on Thursday.

Everton boss Moyes, who announced earlier he would be leaving the club after 11 years in charge, was the hot favorite to take over from his fellow Scot at United and has signed a six-year contract from July 1.

MANCHESTER, England (Reuters) – Shock, uncertainty and an air of inevitability hung in the air on the red side of Manchester on Wednesday as fans digested Alex Ferguson’s retirement announcement.

Some milled around Old Trafford, where the “Sir Alex Ferguson” stand and statue of the Scot are the very visible reminders of just how important he has been for Manchester United, while others calmed their nerves with a pint in the pub.

Merseyside derby win will net Everton rare bonus

LIVERPOOL (Reuters) – The Merseyside derby takes on added significance this weekend as Everton head to Anfield seeking to finish above bitter rivals Liverpool for successive seasons in the top flight for the first time since 1937.

A win on Sunday would ensure David Moyes’s side could not be overtaken by Liverpool, although victory in itself would be an achievement as they have not come back from the red side of town with three points for 14 years.
