Heavy spending in England but not on English players

MANCHESTER, England (Reuters) – Record spending by Premier League clubs signalled a desire to keep up the English top flight’s self-proclaimed reputation as the best in the world, along with a message that homegrown talent was perhaps not.

With Andy Carroll’s move to West Ham for $23 million (14 million pounds) the biggest deal involving an Englishman in the latest transfer window, and a trend for the top clubs to sell off rather than buy local talent, confidence in the country’s players seems low.

Fellaini buy cannot mask sense of poor window for United

MANCHESTER, England (Reuters) – The last-gasp signing of Marouane Fellaini has done little to freshen the air as the transfer window slammed shut with a whiff of desperation, farce and disappointment hanging over Manchester United.

The Premier League champions made all the right noises at the start of the close season with bids for Barcelona’s Cesc Fabregas and media reports of a desire to recapture Cristiano Ronaldo signalling real ambition to net a big name.

Decision time for Rooney in 48 hours – Mourinho

MANCHESTER, England (Reuters) – Wayne Rooney needs to break his silence in the next 48 hours and either commit to Manchester United or say he wants to leave the club, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said on Monday as he urged his top target to end the transfer saga.

The London club have made two unsuccessful bids for the England striker and have not ruled out making a third with their pursuit of him coming after former United manager Alex Ferguson said in May that Rooney wanted to quit Old Trafford.

Manchester United and Chelsea draw as Rooney saga bubbles on

MANCHESTER, England (Reuters) – Manchester United and Chelsea drew 0-0 in the Premier League on Monday as the action in the season’s first big match failed to match the intrigue of the Wayne Rooney transfer saga that swirled throughout.

David Moyes began his first home match in charge of the champions by naming Chelsea target Rooney in his starting line-up, giving a clear message that his club’s message of ‘he is not for sale’ still stood after two failed bids for the striker.
