Benaud is so shrewd he probably waited for a time such as this to make the announcement.

In Ian Wooldridge’s ‘Searching for Heroes’, he dedicates three pages to his great friend after he said he would not be returning to commentate on English TV in 2005. Wooldridge notes that a Wisden poll on the greatest commentator (before Benaud’s announcement) attracted 12,000 votes, 10,128 of which went to Benaud. He doesn’t say how many Mark Nicholas got.

The other great commentators are to be found on Test Match Special, they’re still going as I write, twitching in the commentary box as England press for victory against the Windies. They are a team, a brilliant one at that, but Benaud was in a class of his own.

‘Thank you very much. I’m off,’ he would no doubt say, as he did at dinner parties when the clock struck 10pm, Wooldridge writes.
