Now is not a good time to compare the men’s game with the women’s and the question of value for money, both for the people who hand out the prize money and for those who buy the tickets, has come up again.
Three of the four women semi-finalists have yet to drop a set and three of the four quarter-finals — Dinara being the exception — together lasted less time than the fourth round battle between Andy Murray and Stanislas Wawrinka under the new roof.
Yet here’s the number that has got a lot of people talking on Tuesday — the four semi-finalists are guaranteed at least 212,500 pounds each in prize money for their troubles. In three cases, that’s for playing eight sets of tennis apiece.
But any calls to turn back the clock and reinstate the disparity in prize money should be resisted.
It’s true that the women’s game needs more players with the talent to challenge the Williams sisters, Venus and Serena, but they will surely come. Women’s tennis recently lost its undisputed number one in Justine Henin, who retired a little over 12 months ago to everyone’s surprise. Any sport losing its best player could be forgiven for struggling for a little while.
In fact, in just a few years the women’s game has had to say goodbye not only to Henin but Kim Clijsters (although she is coming back in some form), Martina Hingis and Jennifer Capriati, while Lindsay Davenport appears to be on her way as well.
That’s a large void to fill, and the loss has left spectators in a transitional period whereby a seemingly endless line of teenaged eastern european prodigies emerge to replace the last great hope to shine momentarily.
This situation will, no doubt, eventually come good. Just give it time… and in the mean time, enjoy watching the men.

Nonsense. No way should women players recieve the same money as men at Wimbledon (actually they earn more because their matches are so short they can play doubles too). This political correctness, plain and simple.
- Posted by NickI have to admit, I was disgusted watching the low quality and lack of effort by both women in the Safina-Lisicki match and I was told that was actually more interesting than the two virtual walkovers the Williams sisters had.
It is worse when I had watched Nole and Roddick have two nearly perfect early matches, and was jaw-dropped by the Haas-Cilic match…then too excited to sleep for an hour after I was smart enough to tape the Wraricki-Murray battle and watched it when I got back from work and after the family was settled in..
My feeling is that the ATP should be honest and determine what percent of revenue comes from the mens game, including TV ratings of games and ATP’s cut of endorsements - and the woman’s game, and adjust the prize money accordingly.
It’s not “the same job”. It SURE isn’t equal pay for equal work. If, in the future, fans flock back to the women’s game and their endorsements are again golden - then good for them. But for now I share Navratilova’s sentiment. After Henin’s departure, I am as a woman embarassed about the women’s game and with the end of dull three strokes or less for the point “serve and volley” mens tennis - almost exclusively watching the men.
- Posted by chris fordAre we assuming women train for less time, do fewer press conferences, or promote fewer events. Maybe they should get paid less but tennis is more than an extra set each match.
- Posted by Joe BrockIn your average grand slam, men & woman have to play through 7 rounds.
Men have to win 3 sets to get through a round so potentially the minimum number of sets required to win the tournament is 21.
Women only have to win 2 sets per round, so therefore they can win the tournament in 14 sets.
Assuming the minimum number of sets are played thats a difference of 7 between the male & female victors. This means that the women will get paid the same amount for doing 2/3 the work as the men.
