Why is your nose so red? The wacky world of Wimbledon

With hundreds of members of the international press descending on the All England Club every year to cover Wimbledon, players inevitably face a range of questions in their post-match news conferences as reporters seek to find a new or quirky angle for a story.

Most of the more bizarre questions never make it in to their final reports, but now the dust has settled on Roger Federer’s record-breaking win, here is a collection of the strangest.

Reporter: Will (your autobiography) be about tennis?
Five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams: I guess it will be about me, so I’m sure a huge part of it will be about tennis.

Reporter: I heard you were in the tube the other day, the underground; is that true?
Men’s singles champion Roger Federer: Not true.

Reporter: I understand you’re quite friendly with Justin Timberlake and that he came to see you on Saturday.
Men’s singles runner up Andy Roddick: Uhm, I’ve never met him.

Reporter: Have you got a cold?
Fourth seed Novak Djokovic: No

Reporter: Is that the first time your monthly cycle has affected you so dramatically like that?
Jelena Jankovic: I never had problems like that in the past. It was my first time experience.

Reporter: Why is your nose so red?
Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka: With the towel, new towel. Irritating.

Reporter: Serena, you’re into surfing. Is that why you think your forehand went to Hawaii yesterday? Have you been in touch with your forehand? What did your forehand say?
Women’s champion Serena Williams: My forehand is hopefully on a flight. But I don’t know. We’ll see. We’ll see tomorrow.

Reporter: Truth be told, who was better in high school in basketball, you or Mardy (Fish)?
Men’s singles runner-up Andy Roddick: Mardy. Well, on team. I would kick his ass one-on-one pretty much every time. I’m more physical.

Reporter: How long do you sleep? How many hours do you need to sleep?
Fifth seed Juan Martin Del Potro: Depends if I go out, maybe 13 hours.

Reporter: Can I just ask how much of a fan of cricket are you, and who are you going to be supporting next week?
British number one Andy Murray (head in hands): Yeah, let’s go to the next (question).

Reporter: When was the last press conference when you were only asked about tennis?
Sixth seed Jelena Dokic: Never, unfortunately.

One comment so far

I would become agitated as well, all those absolutely stupid questions.
