Usain Bolt, and how I spurred him on to greatness

bolt1His feet are now worth millions but for one horrible, time-stopping moment back in 2005, Usain Bolt’s path to athletics immortality could have been very different.

Four years ago I covered the world championships for Reuters in Helsinki and was part of a group of journalists invited by sponsors to meet the then 18-year-old Bolt, an emerging but raw talent who had already had lofty expectations bestowed on him having become world 200 metres junior champion at 15.

At an informal gathering in a lounge bar outside the Olympic stadium in the Finnish capital, Bolt sat himself down on a two-seater sofa and waited as a cluster of reporters gathered around. Not wanting to be out of ear shot and seeing that no-one had taken the seat next to the Jamaican, I spotted my
opportunity.

With a reaction time that would have graced the start of any sprint final, I zoomed towards the sofa and announced my arrival by clumsily planting one heavy foot down on top of Bolt’s.

Bolt leapt to his feet in pain, hopped around for a few seconds, massaged and inspected his tender toes to make sure all five were still in working order and plonked himself back down.

Cue one very embarrassed and apologetic journalist.

Happily, for Bolt, there appeared to be no obvious injury. Happily, for me, he seemed to bear me no ill will. Well, not outwardly anyway.

I did wonder days later, after Bolt pulled up injured and finished last in the 200 metres final behind forgotten man Justin Gatlin, if I had contributed to his demise. Bolt, who had talked optimistically of his medal chances, was doing remarkably well in lane one, just half a stride behind Gatlin but 60 metres from home he put on the brakes.

Four years on Bolt has the world at his feet. On Sunday night I sat on my sofa at home and watched, like millions around the world, in awe as the lanky Jamaican smashed his own world record in Berlin.

LOL nice one Justin. Perhaps instead you impacted positively on his ability to run faster. Never mind ‘I’m the dad of Michael Jacksons kids’, the hot ticket surely is ‘that Bolt’d be nuffink without me’ ;)

A lucky escape Justin. I fear I had an influence on the great man too when I asked him in a press conference on thursday what he thought of the new “no chances” false start rule to be introduced next year.
“I’ve never false-started so it won’t really effect me,” he said. Three days later he false-started in the semi-final.
I must have planted a seed…but seems he was able to clear his mind of it without much difficulty.
What an amazing thing to see live.

Puma should make limited edition Bolt “Justin Palmer” spikes, with a flat bit on the top…

its amazing how bolt smashes world records as if he was breaking eggs. i watched in awe how he dealt with the expectations of billions in the world by breaking the worls record he set a year ago not by a 200hundredth of a second but by 0.11 seconds. i hope years to coame we wont wake up to see bolt be accused o being a drug cheat.

Justin, as a favour to the nation, could you seek a similar interview with Ricky Ponting before the final ashes test?

Bolt obviously worked on his speed to make sure he could make a quick getaway in case he ever saw Justin again.

Excellent Dave, I heard Clarke, North and Hilfenhaus are holding a sit-down do with Punter.
I wonder when supermarkets worldwide are going to start stocking yams owing to popular demand?

Not you Justin, with your clumsy feet nor a written off BMW M3 in a thorny field can halt the development of this sprinting legend.

Since words are inadequate to describe The Man’s exploits we will have to resign ourselves to opt for the simple word-
BOLT(v): To break records, to set limits, to be cool under pressure, to astound, to leave speechless, to inspire, to motivate
BOLT (n): A star, a legend, a superior performance.

Oh I’m sure there is more. Big Up The Big Man to di worl.
