That’s better, 5-1 and Pick of the Week as well; the Lineman is on a roll. But Week Four looks scarier than Ray Lewis coming at you on a blitz.
Record: 12-6. Last week: 5-1. Pick of the Week: 2-1
PICK OF THE WEEK
Cincinnati Bengals (2-1) at Cleveland Browns (0-3) (Line Browns plus-5 1/2)
Now that the Detroit Lions finally have a win, the Browns have taken the crown as the NFL’s worst team. Winless Rams and Chiefs are contenders but the Browns are making a strong bid for the number one pick in next year’s draft. Bengals meanwhile are one fluky tipped pass away from starting the season a perfect 3-0.
Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer has led the Cats to upset wins over the Pack and Steelers. Cleveland offense has generated just one offensive touchdown in three games bringing the Brady Quinn experiment to an end. Veteran QB Derek Anderson gets the starting assignment for the Browns.
Battle of Ohio ends in surrender. Take the Bengals, give up the 5 1/2 points.
Tennessee Titans (0-3) at Jacksonville Jaguars (1-2) (Line Titans minus-3 points)
It’s desperation time in Nashville, one more loss and the Titans could become one of those sad country songs we all love. How things have changed. A year ago the Titans rolled into Jacksonville and rang up their 10th straight win.
This season they stumble into the River City searching for their first. Titans quarterback Kerry Collins has not looked good but leads the Titans into Jacksonville Stadium where they have picked up wins in four of the last five visits. The Jaguars are coming off a big win over Houston last week but the Titans need a victory in the worst way. They say you can smell desperation. I smell a win.
Take the Titans, surrender the three points.
Seattle Seahawks (1-2) at Indianapolis Colts (3-0) (Line Colts minus-9)
Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning looks in MVP form and the Colts are looking like Super Bowl contenders. The battered Seahawks look like they’ve been mugged, missing seven starters, including quarterback Matt Hasselbeck in last week’s loss to the Bears.
Manning has been sacked just twice this season and tossed seven touchdowns. Seahawks have given up 48 points the last two weeks and Manning is ready to shred a leaky Seattle secondary. Indianapolis’s undersized and overworked defence might be without sack machine Dwight Freeney but after two big road wins the Colts return home to the big Oil drum Lucas Field ready to light it up for the home fans.
Take the Colts, give up the nine points.
Dallas Cowboys (2-1) at Denver Broncos (3-0) (Line Broncos plus-3 1/2)
After two games at Jerry Jones’ new billion dollar playpen, the Cowboys hit the road for the Mile High City and a meeting with the surprising Broncos. The Broncos are unbeaten but their three wins have come against the Bengals, Browns and Raiders. Browns and Raiders are among the NFL’s worst while the win over Bengals came on a fluky tipped pass now referred to as the Immaculate Deflection.
Dallas have problems, Tony Romo’s status as an elite quarterback has been openly challenged, their running game is banged up with injuries to Marion Barber and Felix Jones and their receiving corps has not impressed. But the Cowboys’ only loss has been to the mighty Giants.
Their second loss won’t come this week in Denver. Take the Cowboys, give up the 3 1/2.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-3) at Washington Redskins (1-2) (Line Buccaneers plus-seven)
The Redskins have spent the week dealing with the embarrassment of falling to the Detroit Lions, who ended a 19-game losing skid with their victory in the Motor City. Redskins coach Jim Zorn is feeling more heat in the U.S. capital than President Barack Obama after his failed pitch to land the 2016 Olympics for Chicago.
Another loss to the leaking Bucs, who have dropped seven straight, could push Zorn to the unemployment line. After being shutout by the Giants last week, the Bucs have dumped quarterback Byron Leftwich in favour of untested Josh Johnson, who gets his first career start.
Washington QB Jason Campbell has not impressed but has plenty of weapons to work with in running back Clinton Portis and wide out Santana Moss. CBall, our Washington insider (who is betting on ‘Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs’ to win the Academy Award for Best Picture of the Year) says Skins are lock for the bounceback win.
That’s worrying but Red Alert, Redskins win. Take the Redskins and give up the seven.
San Diego Chargers (2-1) at Pittsburgh Steelers (1-2) (Line Chargers plus-6 1/2)
Could the Super Bowl champion Steelers go 1-3? You bet they could. There is a bit of meltdown happening in Steeltown, their running game is MIA and the defence has missed wildman safety Troy Polamalu more than expected. The Steelers’ two losses have both been by three points but their Week One win over the Titans was also by three.
The Chargers have the NFL’s second ranked passing attack and with the menacing Polamalu watching from the sidelines quarterback Philip Rivers will pick apart the Pittsburgh secondary. Chargers have not won in 13 regular season games at Heinz Field and the Steelers have not dropped three in row since 2006.
Steelers could end their two-game skid against the Chargers but it won’t be by seven points.
Take the Chargers and seven points.
