Flippers and snorkel required at U.S. Open
Lengthy rain delays along with saturated greens and fairways resembling attractions at a water theme park have sorely tested the patience of the players at this week’s U.S. Open.
The second major championship of the year is already heading for at least a Monday finish with the chance of a sixth day should a playoff be needed to decide the title.
Heavy overnight rain at Bethpage Black delayed the resumption of the third round by more than four hours on Sunday, piling on further frustration for golfers already getting to bed late and having to wake up before dawn.
“It’s kind of like being stuck in an airport and they won’t refund you,” tournament leader Ricky Barnes said. “But at least in an airport you’ll come back and you’ll get to your destination every once in a while.
