Jayawardene impact will be felt for years

MUMBAI (Reuters) – Mahela Jayawardene closed the curtain on an illustrious test career on Monday, leaving a huge gap in the Sri Lanka batting order as well as the dressing room, which the island country will find difficult to bridge.

The 37-year-old right-hander, one of cricket’s most elegant batsmen, signed off from the longest format after 11,814 runs in 149 tests with an average of 49.84 during a 17-year test career.

Wretched form in England exposes India’s batting woes

MUMBAI (Reuters) – Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli’s wretched form in England has again exposed India’s failure to fill the huge void left in the batting line-up when Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar retired.

Dravid, India’s formidable number three batsman, ended his career in January 2012 after scoring 13,288 runs in 164 tests, with many of those coming in tricky overseas conditions.

Pressure mounts on Jadeja following week to forget

MUMBAI (Reuters) – As India licked their wounds following the humiliating defeat to England at Southampton on Thursday, Ravindra Jadeja was probably hurting more than most after enduring a miserable week both on and off the field.

The 25-year-old, considered an all-rounder with his modest left-arm orthodox action and ability to wield the bat lower down the order, has been thrust into the role of lead spinner for a country that tends to build its attack around slow bowlers.
