U.S. OKs overdose treatment to fight spike in painkiller deaths

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. regulators on Thursday approved a painkiller overdose treatment in a portable device that will allow people without medical training to use in emergency situations, a move to combat the rise of deaths from prescription painkiller abuse and illicit drugs.

The Food and Drug Administration said it cleared a small, hand-held injector device that delivers the drug naloxone nearly three months ahead of schedule under so-called “priority review”, as painkiller drug overdose deaths increase, becoming the leading cause of mortality by injury in the United States.

Americans cool to NJ’s Christie as Massachusetts’ Warren rises: poll

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – New Jersey Governor Chris Christie fell to ninth place from his top spot among favored U.S. politicians after a scandal over traffic lane closures on the George Washington Bridge, according to a Quinnipiac University ranking released on Thursday.

The poll measuring Americans’ sentiment toward political leaders was taken last week as the well-known Republican, who is often mentioned as a possible 2016 U.S. presidential contender, released an internal investigation two months after the lane shutdown popularly referred to as “Bridgegate” came to light.

Majority of Americans want to treat, not jail, drug users: survey

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – About two-thirds of Americans say drug abusers need access to treatment to address their addiction rather than criminal prosecution that could lead to jail time, according to a poll released on Wednesday that highlights the public’s shifting attitude toward illegal drugs in the United States.

While people are still worried about the extent of drug abuse, especially in their schools and neighborhoods, those surveyed supported less harsh punishment for non-violent offenders, especially marijuana users, the Pew Research Center found.
