Chelsea Clinton dismisses “Monica” question

March 26, 2008

Campaigning for her mother, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, Chelsea Clinton answers lots of questions from potential voters at campaign events but never from reporters.rtr1xusd.jpg

But in Indianapolis on Tuesday, Clinton brushed aside a question from an individual in the crowd who asked for her take on her mother’s handling of the Monica Lewinsky scandal, WISH-TV reported.

“Wow, you’re the first person actually that’s ever asked me that question in the, I don’t know, 70 college campuses that I’ve now been to and I do not think that’s any of your business,” Clinton responded according to the station.

The crowd at the student union at Butler University applauded, WISH said. That was supposed to be the last question, but Clinton insisted on taking one more question, the report said.

When it was revealed in 1998 that President Bill Clinton had had an affair with Lewinsky, the news set off a protracted drama that led to his impeachment and a failed attempt to remove him from office.

I think the Clinton campaign held this preemptive strike on themselves so that Hillary could say “I think my daughter answered that question very well thank you” when, not if, it is brought up again.
The Clintons have no morals.
Chelsea showed her pain.
Hillary has lost but is in denial.
Bill was impeached for lying about sex with Monica in the White House.
Bill stated “I did not have sex with that woman and it is none of your business.”
Hmmmm. Similar answer there?

yes, next question

Wow! The perfect answer to a stupid question. Too bad that answer was not given when the affair was first hyped up by the media. It was as if no person in power ever had an affair before – uh, yeah right. I’d rather have a president “blanking” an intern, than blanking the whole nation like our current administration.

Posted by Marla | Report as abusive

Chelsea was very rude when asked the question on her mother’s handling of the Monica L scandal. Hey, if they put you out there, you have to expect the hard questions and be prepared to answer them diplomatically. That was bad, bad bad for old Hillary. The truth is her handling of the scandal was awful and made her look like Donna Reed. Rumor has it that it was a deal that she was promised big rewards for if she kept quiet, acted like the forgiving wife and held hands with that creep Billy. In other words, she compromised her moral principles when she should have stood up for what was right.

Posted by Terri | Report as abusive

Furthermore, in answer Maria, the problem with “a president “blanking” and intern” is that the President was AT WORK on taxpayer dollars when official state dignitaries were kept waiting outside for him to show up; and he shamed the nation on an international scale; and he set a terrible example to the youth of this nation when he lied, under the oath, that oral sex was not sex; and he broke the laws that he swore to uphold when he was sworn in as President. I could go on and on, but you get the picture. It was not just a random person in power having sex. It was the person who held the highest office in this land. Incredible sleeze!

Atta a girl Chelsea. Great answer to a stupid and rude question. I am proud of you and your mom for standing by your dad, the bset President since FDR.
Teri: get a life already. President Clinton Didn’t do anmything wrong. Monica was old enough to know bett6er, besides she instigated it anyway. Besides nothing wrong with fooling around on the side. Even if he did it as President it was between consenting adults. Big deal, sex is not a crime when when it is between two consenting indivduals. At least Clinton didn’t get 4’001 soldiers killed for oil and over a million Iraqi’s killed for no reason. Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. Bush is guilty of war crimes. Clinton only had sex. Sex is fun, war is murder. See the difference? Sex no one gets hurt, war kills and maims. war is a sin, sex isn’t, duh!

She is a Clinton, and as a Clinton campaigning for another Clinton, Chelsea should not be at all surprised to have to confront questions that have historical foundation to have subjected her Papa Clinton to become so notoriously known world wide.

Her mother seems to enjoy questioning Senator Obama’s moral judgement by his attendance in Rev. wright’s Church. Perhaps, it’s about time her parents examine the type of Church they attend, a Church that seems not to have taught them to hold extramarital and sexual abuses on young interns as being morally and ethically wrong.

Monica was “abused”??? Give me a freakin’ break. I’m a 20-yr-old college student & I have the sense not to get involved with a married man, no matter what his wealth & power … I speak from experience because I had the chance & I was attracted to the guy as well. But I listened to my brain & conscience which Monica did not. Besides, she even admitted that she threw herself at him, not the other way around. Why aren’t you mad at Dubya for getting so many of our brave young men & women killed during his infamous presidency???

Posted by Nancy Sabet | Report as abusive

Her mother is running for President, so yes, it is our business. She accused the Republican’s of a “right wing conspiracy” instead of finding out the facts. This was an emotional snap to judgment and shows that she reacts first with venom and then thinks later. This is not the type of person I want in office. Her father was our Commander in Chief, his salary paid for by us, and had an affair with his young employee. Yes, this is our business because he was her boss and there are standards when it comes to having an affair with your employee. Most businesses have rules against such behavior and a superior can be fired for such behavior. It jeopardizes the company and makes them vulnerable to lawsuits. Bill Clinton put our Nation at risk when he chose to break the rules and sleep with his intern. This was not an affair than happened after hours with an outside party, this affair occured during office hours with an office employee. Yes, it is our business, and how Hillary Clinton handled it is our business as well. Especially now that she wants to subject our Nation to four more years of potential sexual harrassment charges due to her husband’s inability to control his urges.

I love how the press twists the truth.

The student at Butler University who asked the question is a self-proclaimed Hillary supporter who works on the school’s newspaper.

What he actually asked Chelsea was for her opinion “on the criticism of her mother [and] how … [her handling] of the Lewinsky scandal might be a sign of weakness” and how “she might not be a strong enough candidate to be president” as a result.

Recall that Hillary said allegations about her husband and the White House intern were manufactured by a “vast right-wing conspiracy” before the truth came out!

See how some of these so-called, main stream news agencies have spun the facts. Chelsea was obviously coached and ready to answer this question. Unfortunately, her response doesn’t match up with the question, which has been spun by the press to sound like an insult.

I think it definitely is our business, considering that her mom works for us. Isn’t that what senators do?

Thumbs Up to Chelsea Clinton who gave the absolute correct response when asked a ignorant question regarding a personal matter. She’s just like everyone else. What person would appreciate discussing their mom & dad private affairs? The person who asked that question was so unsensitive to Chelsea. Was it meant to embarrass Chelsea? Chelsea is not responsible for either of her parents actions; whether good or bad & should be respected as the former president’s daughter. Please keep the hecklers & idiots away from this young lady.

Posted by Betty Bostic | Report as abusive

I think it is a valid and useful question and that Chelsea’s answer was rude and pathetic. The fact of the matter is that Hillary was in denial for many years about Bill Clinton’s wandering ways. She denied Gennifer Flowers, Paula Jones, etc. A presidential candidate needs to be able to admit to the truth and not deny the facts.

We are not supose to ask questions about the Clintons past, like her lies about her Arkansas dealings, and why was the former pastor picure whith the former Pre. Clinton at the white House.

WRONG ANSWER CHELSEA. The question was whether he mother’s credibility had been damaged by the affair – a perfectly good and relevant question and an opportunity for a good answer. If the question had been “How has the affair personally affected your family”, then yes, none of your business.

Not good on her feet at all. I can see why the Clinton’s are trying to keep her out of interviews.

Live Free or Die.

Posted by backbeat | Report as abusive

It was not a rude question at all. Indeed, it is one that should have been asked much sooner and more often — not only of Chelsea but of Hillary, too.
Get something straight right now. Hillary Clinton is running for the position of most powerful person on the planet, a position paid for by the taxpayers of the United States of America. She is already on the government payroll as a U.S. Senator. For the last year or so, she has been running around the country, at contributors’ and taxpayers’ expense campaigning for the job. In other words, she has been on a job interview.
Now, as one of the 300 million in this country who will be involved in the hiring process, I think it is most certainly my business to know how the next person to get that job is going to conduct himself/herself under fire answering tough questions and making difficult decisions.
As First Lady, she handled her husband’s affair with (1.) denial, (2.) paranoia and then three (3.) political double-talk. How can we believe she respond to the problems of this country any differently?
If anyone has been “blanking” the country, it has been this woman, her husband and their no-holds-barred political machine.
And, now we know her daughter is just like her. A scary thought.

You expect to understand the whole of these candidates by all means necessary, regardless, so Chelsea could have responded, regardless of how painful the question may be. We expect Obama and his campaige to respond and be prepared at all times. Chelsea owes her mom this respect after such a wacko she was in the past. I think the entire Clinton family owes each other something, because they all are a misfit, and do try and make up only have made them look even worser. I’ll be the first to admit that Bill and Hillary are really intelligent people. They’re also equally manipulative, and slimy. Hillary is probably laughing with delight at how a minor incident like Monica detracts from the truly criminal associations that fill her past. Jose Cabrera is/was a major cocaine kingpin and a major financial supporter of both Clintons, along with numerous Indonesian, and Chinese finaciers with clear ties to organized crime in their respective countries. In our country, let us not forget the Rose Law firm debacle, Vince Foster suicide, etc, etc. Interesting how something like Monica-gate overshadows what is truly revealing and criminal about the Clintons. Stop deceiving yourselves America, if Hillary had 5 or 6 fewer IQ points she’d be locked up in Leavenworth. She’s a felon. Period.

Splendid answer to a stupid question. All the blonde dumba**es and rednecks on one side and Stanford, Oxford alum on the other.

As for the whole Clinton did it on taxpayers dollars and time, so did Kennedy and the ‘Great’ FDR died at his MISTRESSES house whom he was having an affair with while president.

Trite, but not asinine was the question. However, it was an incredibly asinine and arrogant answer. Chelsea, while very sharp, has proven to be just as arrogant and elitist as her parents.

Posted by Megan | Report as abusive

The question was not so much about the BC / ML affair as to Hilary’s blaming right wing extremists for the allegations. She could have said that her mother was very stressed over the issue, and may have responded inappropriately. I’m sure there are thousands of woman (and men) who would be sympathetic with that. After all no one would want to have the entire world know that their husband (or wife) was unfaithful. Public humiliation can’t be pleasant. I know private humiliation isn’t. She missed an opportunity to present her Mom in a way that anyone (except the most anti-Hilary people) would understand.

Posted by Robert | Report as abusive

I wish the opportunity had been put to better use, asking why “Mom” lied about her support of NAFTA, lied about her Apocalypse Now story about Bosnia, lied about bringing peace to Northern Ireland, lied about how she “won’t hold hands with the Saudis” when there are already millions and millions of dollars of Saudi money tied to the Clintons and their pet projects, why she’s shamelessly pushing the Wright distraction weeks after it ceased being ‘news’ to distract from her own exposed lies about her ‘experience’, or to ask if Hillary’s pushing the Wright distraction is an open invitation for closer inspection of Hillary’s ties to the creepy, secretive religious organization “The Family”.

But, since Chelsea’s a grown, 27 year old, college educated woman, and is on tour as a surrogate campaigning for a Presidential candidate, any question that is fair for any reporter, or anyone in the general public, to ask, is fair to ask of any surrogate speaking for the campaign – including Chelsea.

If she doesn’t want to answer questions,, she shouldn’t take questions. And the way people who ask questions the Clintons don’t like get “shouted down”by Clinton supporters is eerily reminiscent of the way people got shouted down with “Four more years!” when somebody asked a question Bush supporters didn’t want to hear four years ago.

Posted by ChrisR | Report as abusive

Is it fair?

Perhaps, in terms of journalism.

But it is certainly NOT courteous, respectful, or chivalrous, and shame on those who would stoop to this kind of conduct in our public discourse. Is this how far my fellow American men have descended to treat their female counterparts?

I say this as a die-hard Obama supporter, by the way.

To question a young lady before the public regarding the sexual improprieties committed in the past by her parent is downright despicable. It is truly “ungentlemanly” behavior…the kind that, one hundred and fifty years ago, might have resulted in a challenge to duel. A custom that, given the acceptance of such behavior, we might wish to consider reviving.

That is really what we need a president to do.”

Too bad… lost opportunity.

I’m sick and tired of everyone ragging on Bush when what we’re looking at for the next president is the absolute worst selection of candidates in history. Bush did what he said he would, he kept the terrorist’s out of the U.S. If you can’t understand that, go to a 3rd world country that’s being bombed and live. IF you can’t support our people that are fighting to keep our freedom you ought to move out of the U.S.

What a Rovian question! What “criticism” was this budding young “journalist” referring to? Anonymous criticism? Rightwing criticism? In what way was Hillary ever “weak” in dealing with a most excruciating situation that would’ve crushed almost anyone? As she herself said to a standing ovation everyone knows every last thing about her life…and yet she continues on, because she realizes that she’s privileged and in a position to help other people who deal with more bitter blows every day.

On the other hand H. Clinton visit to “poor” Bosnia was under the heavy artillery. They surely are fit to run the country again. No morals, no principals!!!!!! How many more lies are there?

“Poor Bosnian”

Questions good or bad, it does not matter. Americans need to accept the basic human understanding that sex is an essential part of life, not a separate minute part. The reason why we American get distracted by other people’s sexual behavior is because we are so in denial of our lives and our being. Sex is life. There will be no life on earth without sex. Nobody has the right to judge who is right in sexual behaior or not. If Bill Clinton was born and raised in France, Denmark or Sweden, he would have had enough sexual satisfaction in his life, not to be distracted by a passing fancy. We preach, we judge and yet the most outspoken preachers and pastors in this country, are most sexually perverted ones.
The problem is that Americans do not have enough sex, and this manifests itself in our aggressive behaior as warriors. We fight and kill each other, and we export our agression to every corner of the globe. If George W. Bush, Condolessa Rice and Bush Cheney have as much sexual satisfaction, as Sakorzy of France, we will not be ravaging and killing the Iraqis.
Chelsea screwed up because like her parents and 99.9% of all American, we are taught sex is something bad and that we should hide it, and lie about it. Grow up America and stop screwing up your kids.

I totally agree with those who note that Chelsea Clinton has chosen on her own to jump head first into the political arena. She is on the campaign trail, traveling the country stumping for her Mother, therefore; she should be prepared to answer any pertinent question that could befall any other Clinton surrogate.

While they may hate to admit it, the Monica Lewinsky scandal is a legitimate part of the Clinton presidential legacy and it’s something that they all should be prepared to deal with.

I personally think that she missed a prime opportunity to answer that question as an adult, rather than a brat, by noting how dealing with that unfortunate and very personal issue made not only her family, but specifically her Mother stronger and how she was able to deal with it with class and dignity. Instead Chelsea opted to deal with the question as the child that everyone continues to see her as.

Chelsea had better toughen up and quick because if they get their wish and the Clintons go up against the Republicans, this Primary would be a walk in the park compared to what she stands to be up against and what kind of questions and comments she may be subject to on the actual election campaign trail.

My suggestion…if you can’t stand the heat, get your butt out the kitchen!

The Clinton campaign has a total hands-off policy regarding Chelsea– no interviews, no questions from the press.

You can’t have your cake and eat it too. If she is out campaigning for her mother, she is subject to the same rules that apply to any surrogate of the candidate.

Still, it’s nice to see the Clintons so protective of their 28 year old daughter.

If you can’t ask Chelsea a question without the Clintons going ballistic, just think what they would have done if, when she was say a 22 year old intern, the 49 year old CEO of the company used her as a sexual toy?

Too bad they forgot that Monica was somebody else’s 22 year old daughter when Bill took advantage and the whole Clinton team geared up to destroy her–until the blue dress evidence made that smear campaign pointless.

A fair question in the campaign trail. If she is out there affirming her mothers lies why not take a serious question from a young supporter. It is amazing to me how the 27 year old who is old enough to go out there begging for votes can’t answer questions to anyone. Only the Clintons can get away with that. Maybe the next question that needs to be asked is who is the big boss at the Hedge Fund company she works for and how much he has contributed to her mother’s campaign not to mention her father’s library.

To question how the affair affected her mother was absolutely appropriate as her mother wants to be President of the United States. It is especially important as her mother pulled that Great Right Wing Conspiracy nonsense. If Miss Chelsea wants to be treated with a hands off policy she should not be actively campaigning. She is 27 year old woman not a school girl.

But as with her parents she is one arrogant individual. Perhaps only an insensitive jerk would ask the question, but only a family of selfish, self important jerks would get themselves in this situation time after time. Perhaps Miss Chelsea was traumatized by the sniper fire in Tuzla? Why do you good Clintonites think so much of the Party is deserting Senator Clinton for Senator Obama?

Excellent and vital question to be answered and Chel baby, it is the American peoples business! Hillary is not running for a head manager position at McDonald’s but rather for the President of the U.S.

This question goes right to the matter of Hillary’s values, morals and trust worthiness. If she places her ambitions above her self respect, what do you think she will do with ours? If she can’t control her husband how can she expect to lead the country? Bubba lied to the American people ON TV no less while almost getting impeached (not very impressive Bill), Hillary (only has only stayed with him to give her a shot at the presidency, while carpet-backing N.Y.) spins everything (sniper story) to her whim. The American people should be very frightened with this unscrupulous, power-hungry woman who places her values behind her ambitions.

I’m a little confused here. When Bill Clinton was in the white house, lying about some sexual activities, supporters were quick to say that his track record was the only important thing, character is not the important issue for a president.

Now Obama is out there, and the same people are saying that his lack of experience/track record are not important, but his character IS.

What gives?

I think that it was a cheeky question, BUT, instead of an actual answer, she just tried to make the questioner embarassed. As usual, instead of a real answer, we just ahd a bunch of zealous college kids clapping.

If they want to continue to use Chelsea as their connection to the young voting public, she;s going to have to deal with answering some tough questions, not just glad-handing around the country

Chelsea Clinton may not want to talk about Monica’s blue dress but we Americans shouldn’t let Bill Clinton’s daughter prevent us from having a conversation that is very important to the future of our country. If Senator Clinton becomes our next president, Bill Clinton will be back in the White House and, almost certainly, up to his old tricks. Despite running an excellent and tough campaign, Hillary Clinton has repeatedly demonstrated an inability to control her husband. And we should use this insight as an opportunity to assess the cost we paid as a country for that blue dress and the lies that Bill Clinton told about everything related to it.

Look, don’t get me wrong: I thought the attempt to impeach Clinton was an incredible miscarriage of justice. The only problem was he didn’t make it any easier with his repeated lies and misstatements, to say nothing of his incredibly inappropriate behavior. At least one member of Senator Clinton’s current campaign has suggested to me that Bill is still the same old skirt chaser he always was. If and when his wife becomes President, this will no longer be his private business anymore. And since there seems to be scant likelihood that Bill Clinton will change his ways, it is– with all respect to Chelsea’s sensitive feelings– a good idea that we have a national discussion now about whether we as a nation can afford another four years of Bill’s marauding sexual appetite given the ambitious (and admirable) agenda which his wife has determined to fulfill.

One committed supporter of Senator Clinton expressed her private wish to me that Hillary Clinton– humiliated and insulted so many times by a selfish and narcissistic husband– would leave Bill Clinton once and for all. It will probably never happen, but if it did, I’ll bet Senator Clinton’s popularity would surge in the polls. I can tell you one thing: she’d certainly get my currently undecided vote.

Anyway you cut it, Bill Clinton wagged his finger and lied to the American people. That is what took Richard Nixon down. Hillary had to know about the possibility of the accusations being true because there had been prior incidents of women accusing Bill of extracurricular activities.

I understand that Hillary is campaigning and these questions will come up to Chelsea. I think Chelsea handled the question very well. What else is she supposed to say. Everyone should stop giving her such a hard time.

Chelsea is absolutly right – it is no one’s business. I applaud her and think those that were ill-mannered enough to ask needed to be put in their place.

I cannot believe anyone could be so rude or have such lack of repect for to ask that question to the daughter of the father that cheated on her mother. These people have no manners, now it’s fashionable because the press is endorsing it for a sound bite. RUDE!

Chelsea stated yesterday that “You are voting for my mother not my father” so should that not allow Obama to say “you are voting for me, not my pastor?”

End of subject.

RE: Chelsea Clinton / Monica Lewinsky Question

My question is …

“Was Monica Lewinsky really hired as a paid prostitute?”

Monica was chosen-hired for her randy handiness and skills in giving BJ’s as well as her willingness to participate in unusual, vulgar and kinky sexual activities on the job – and to talk dirty to to her boss (President Clinton) in the Oval Office during office hours and after hours as well.

Usually when a woman does these type of sexual activities as her paying job, she is defined as a paid hooker. If Monica was paid for her 9-5 sexual services to Bill Clinton, they were both breaking the law, as well as degrading and cheapening the office of the president with their low brow sex – as well as detracting them both from working on issues important to the voters who were paying both their saleries. Usually if a company president (or boss) paid an employee for similar sexual services during office hours, they would both be fired if caught.

Another question, Who was the “pimp” that sent Monica to Bill in the first place? Did he/she provide intern-prostitutes for other politicians in a “Heidi-Feiss” operation?

If Chelsea doesn’t want to speak about her family’s private issues then we need to ask her a different question. Does Senator Clinton think it is okay that President Clinton lied to the country? We have the right to ask this question and it is certainly our business to know the answer.

Someone out there please ask her this question as it is unlikely she will campaign in this area again.

Now that Bill is seen as a liability, we’ve got to return to the ramifications of this question. Because I don’t think she should be given important status in Obama’s cabinet, especially as VP.

Think about it.

How will Hillary be respected during overseas negotiations if Bill is caught back home with his pants down again? If she can’t control her husband, how will she control ANY position that she’s representing?
