Tales from the Trail

Clinton tries to ring 3 a.m. alarm again

April 3, 2008

To great effect during the Texas primary, Democratic hopeful Hillary Clinton ran a television ad arguing that she was best able to handle a late night national security crisis if elected to the White House. Now she’s gone back to that well again.

The focus this time is the see-sawing economy and imploding housing market, leading Clinton to question whether presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain can handle that call at 3 a.m.

Clinton, who trails rival Barack Obama in the overall Democratic delegate race, leads in polls in Pennsylvania, the next state to hold its primary. The two senators are neck-and-neck in Indiana, which follows in early May.

Can this new ad focused on McCain help her close the gap again on Obama?

If the phone rings at 3AM, Senator Clinton will not be at home. When big business wanted to pass the new draconian bankruptcy Act in 2005, she simply did not vote to please her handlers. McCain voted in favor obviously and Obama voted against this new law. That law has made it nearly impossible for financially troubled middle class people in obtaining relief, including those who hardships were caused by high medical costs. That relief could have helped in stemming the foreclosure crisis.

Are you sure she’ll be there to answer the call? Will Bill answer it? Or will they both be out at their lovers’ homes? Talk to anyone in Arkansas if you don’t beleive that bit of cynicism. None of us want a 3 a.m. emergency call, but we all can handle it. To say one person or another cannot handle a national security call at 3 a.m. is ridiculous. You do what you have to do. That’s why the President has advisors and generals and a cabinet! They are very well equipped to handle any call 24-hrs/day. Thanks, though, Clinton campaign for preying on our fears again.

Obama appears to speak before he is sure of his actions that is scary !!!!!
Colombia’s president criticizes Barack Obama on trade stance

Colombia’s president sharply criticized U.S. presidential contender Barack Obama on Wednesday for opposing a trade deal with his country, calling him out of touch with the realities of the South American nation.

The White House is urging Congress to approve the trade agreement that would remove most tariffs on American exports and cement Colombia’s preferential trade status with the United States.

But Sen. Obama said Wednesday he would oppose the trade deal, citing Colombia’s record of protecting trade union members from killings.

“I deplore the fact that Sen. Obama, aspiring to be president of the United States, should be unaware of Colombia’s efforts,” said President Alvaro Uribe in a statement released by the presidency. “I think it is for political calculations that he is making a statement that does not correspond to Colombia’s reality.”

Obama and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton are wooing union members as they campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination in Pennsylvania, where the primary is April 22.

“I will oppose the Colombia Free Trade Agreement if President Bush insists on sending it to Congress because the violence against unions in Colombia would make a mockery of the very labor protections that we have insisted be included in these kinds of agreements,” Obama said Wednesday at a meeting of the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO.

This ad campaign proved to be useless the first time around – with the girl in the ad denouncing Clinton herself.
Obama is the best man for America.

A three am phone call that needs immediate attention proves that the administration led by such a leader is not working properly. It denotes micro management on everything for starter. It also shows that the administration is caught flat footed on issues that should have been foreseen long in advance.

A war or an aggression against a country is not something that happens in minutes.

I distrust anyone who claims to be able to react to anything as he or she wakes up. Regardless of what it is, information from trusted sources needs to be gathered, plans of action or reaction need to be made. Jumping to conclusions and acting on them in a short time shows a lack of vision, a lack of information. It shows a total lack of planning but mainly it shows total irresponsibility.

The only case when one is to be woken up is if a house is on fire, literally. To have a leader come out and say ‘I am the best when the house (country in this case) is already in fire’ is not only ridiculous, it is insulting for the organization he or she leads.

When this advertisement first was aired I became angry and was disappointed that the Obama did not see the inherent weakness of this approach.

‘I am the only one qualified to take a phone at three in the morning’. This is saying: ‘I was sleeping on the job’.

‘Your children will be safer under my leadership’ said the Clinton advert. Any parents foolish enough to knowingly trust the life of their dear ones to someone who does not use fire alarms in a dormitory is a potential criminal just like the so-called host.

The only instance where someone can be sleeping is when there is a natural disaster that cannot be foreseen. I know of only one: an earthquake. At this moment, awake (or not), the leader has nothing to do except going in front of the media and say how sorry he or she is for the loss. Doing so at three in the morning is still totally ridiculous as no information on the disaster has been collated, no one is in front of his or her TV, and most of the US is asleep and unaware. Trusted aides are in charge of giving a full picture to a leader before going to the so-called leader. If they are so panicky that they cannot function without direction demonstrates a poor choice in delegating responsibility.

For these reasons, I will not vote for Clinton.

In the current election I will not vote republican because they willingly participated in the support of an administration that led the country next to an abyss. I will not vote at all if Clinton is the nominee. I will not vote Nader because voting for him is voting for a lost cause, the constitution needs to be changed to allow for someone else than a democrat or a republican to be elected.

I just can’t understand why the media keeps saying this. True, she won in the Texas primaries, but lost in the Texas caucus. The Texas two step. Senator Clinton lost in Texas. Obama got the most delegates. Read up.

It appears Hillary has incurable insomnia. It is clear she does not unerstand the financial markets. Things develop over time and crisis is a reflection of long term financial mismanagement. There is no precedence in history that a president got 3am call for financial upheavels. She is creating history.

Clinton obviously thinks Americans are morons. Or she has the critical thinking skills equal to a third grader. Either way its just no good.

This shows she is running out of money!

Who is she going to talk to about the housing crisis and economic “downturn” at 3 AM? Maybe the folks at the WSJ who gave her all her tips on how to make a killing in the market. She knows economics! Oh, yeah! She lied about how a large sum of money ended up in her bank account! She will lie about anything to be elected. She lied about her campaign finances and she won’t even pay a $3000 debt to her alma mater high school! Oh, yes, I want Hillary Clinton to mind my money!

You know, I do not care if she is woman, or if she was a man, or of she was black or Latino – she would not get my vote because she is a congenital liar – not a mis-speaker – an out and out liar!

There is enough problems in the world right now because we were lied to by the President. Do we really need this for eight more years? Magnified!!!

Do we really need McBush? Any additional comments are not necessary.

There are three reasons why I will vote for Obama!

1) Oponpono – the Hawaiian action of solving a problem – sit down with those you disagree with until the problem is solved and all are honoured. The best foreign diplomatic policy is to know everyone in your village and on all the other islands.

2) The Spirit of Aloha – Aloha actually means I share with you my sacred breath – I share your view of life and I live it with you. The best health care programme in the USA is in Hawaii. Check it out. Hillary tried to copy it – she failed.

3) Ohana – the Spirit of the family – all are family and if you are in need of family, you are in mine. This is why he wants our national family to help one another before we try to buy the friendship of others through foreign aid programmes.

He learned these things when he was in Hawaii and he learned them well.

One other thing – he actually knows and understands the Constitution of the United States of America.

I am not a shill for Obama – I just see a good man. And I will vote for him.
Is he perfect? Nope. Is he better than the other choices? In my book, yes.

Aloha… e’

I would think she knows alot about emergency calls to The White House. How they work and how they are handled. So if she says she can do it you best believe she can. I’m sure McCain gets those calls too in his office.

Its midnight here in India and I am bored! You folks do realise that the best way to handle the 3 AM call is to forward it to us here in the middle of the day! :)

Hi! this is hill-aary to speak to someone about a missing foreign policy..press 1 and speak to Bill…

what F&%&ing bank calls @ 3AM ?!?!

And what’s the critical emergency that can’t wait 6 more hours until the market opens – you really think you’re going to get your entire staff up to listen to your plan to resolve our economic issues in 6 hours before the markets open again, and strip your staff of work-life balance…get real Hilary!

Hillary, this ad is so …. last century! Even the second (or third)time around. 9-11 happened during broad daylight! Katrina was flooding and a needless disaster Day in…Day out! Economic crisis occur over time, not at 3 in the morning. This is the age of cell phones, video conferences via the internet, immediate communication. That ad is so reminiscent of the cold war. I’m surprised you don’t have the children hiding under the bed, heads covered, hiding from nuclear bombs!

The pictures shown in your ad do not even reflect a cross-section of what many American Homes look like in the middle of the night. Father’s also check in on their children while some Moms work all night. Many children share their room with a sibling. Some live in trailers, shelters, parks.

Fear-based ads may influence those who already support you, but for the rest of us………give us the ‘Audacity of Hope’ for a President in the 21st Century to lead America in a new direction with a new last name!

Typical “Democratic” and liberal hypocrisy. From Gore (the biggest hypocrite and “embellisher”) to Hillary and Obama (closet Islamist???) self loathing, hypocrisy and anti-US rhetoric is trademark. We will never need liberals or Democrats in power. EVER.

NO OBAMA EVER!

NO CLINTONS EVER AGAIN!

NO DEMOCRATS EVER!

With respect to our friends here at Reuters, the Rasmussen folks did a little poll on how the last 3 AM ad played:

The commercial was credited as one factor enabling Clinton to turn her campaign around in Texas last week. But, 42% of all voters said the person they’d most want to answer the phone was John McCain. Among all voters, 25% picked Clinton and another 25% named Obama as the person they’d want in the White House when a foreign policy crisis call arrived.

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_c ontent/politics/election_20082/2008_pres idential_election/42_want_mccain_to_answ er_3_00_a_m_phone_call

So not only is the ad not distinguishing Hillary from Obama in any material way, it’s actually helping John McCain enormously.

Shorter Hillary Clinton: If I can’t win, I’m taking the whole darn Democratic Party down with me.

Thanks, Hill. No, really. Thanks…
