For Democrats, Biden is next best thing

September 2, 2015

WASHINGTON – U.S. Democratic voters would choose Vice President Joe Biden as their preferred candidate for president in 2016 if current frontrunner Hillary Clinton shows signs of faltering, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll.

More than 38 percent of Democrats polled said they would vote for Biden in the Democratic Party nominating contest, if polling indicated that Clinton would lose to a Republican candidate. Thirty percent of Democratic voters said they would back liberal Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders should Clinton, a former secretary of state, run into trouble, according to the tracking poll conducted from Aug. 28 through Sept. 1.

So if Hillary is shown to be losing to a Republican, 21.8% will still vote for Clinton, and 23.8% simply wouldn’t vote for anyone?

This Reuters/Ipsos online polling seems highly suspect. I’m wondering if Reuters chooses people from their own database. Their methodology is not clearly defined:

“Our data is primarily drawn from online surveys using sampling methods developed in consultation with several outside experts. These involve recruiting respondents from the entire population of US-based Internet users in addition to hundreds of thousands of individuals pre-screened by Ipsos. The responses are then weighted based on demographic information.”
