Wondering why the phrase ‘Paris is in Germany’ was trending on Twitter all day Thursday? That was the Internet’s reaction to a tweet from Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

“Man shot inside Paris police station. Just announced that terror threat is at highest level. Germany is a total mess-big crime. GET SMART!,” Trump tweeted on Thursday.

The tweet received nearly 10,000 likes, 10,000 retweets and thousands of comments:

“@realDonaldTrump Paris is in France……” replied Twitter user Ron Haskell (@RonHaskell). Haskell’s tweet received nearly 2,500 likes and 700 retweets.

“Just so everyone knows, Paris is in Germany now! Tell your friends! #DonaldTrump” tweeted Perez Hilton (@PerezHilton), the verified account for celebrity gossip site Perez Hilton.com.

“Two separate thoughts, one tweet. No comment necessary,” a Donald Trump Campaign spokesperson wrote in an email to Reuters.

This is not the first time Trump has stolen social media spotlight as a result of being called out for allegedly getting his facts wrong. During the Fox Business GOP debate in November, Senator Rand Paul corrected Donald Trump by pointing out that China is not part of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade pact.

It’s Trump, facts don’t matter.

And they continue to play right into trumps hands. Getting him more and more free coverage. Well played Donald, well played.

There you go, Donald. Keep playing of the fears and prejudices of the frightened, aging white folks and you will win the Republican nomination.
