Jeb Bush’s gun tweet ricochets

February 17, 2016

Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush tweeted a photo Tuesday of what appeared to be a handgun, with his name and title engraved on the top of the weapon. The photo bore the caption “America.” Gun control legislation has been a critical issue in the Republican primary campaign, with candidates vying to prove their pro-gun bona fides.

The tweet immediately inspired derisive parodies across the Twitterverse, offering alternative definitions of American values. One Twitter user posted a photo of former National Basketball Association star Shaquille O’Neal holding what appears to be a small lemur, with the caption “America.”

Another went with a photo of a goat with the same caption.

Not all of the other tweets are suitable for a family blog post. Bush’s pro-gun tweet isn’t the first time that he’s brought unwanted attention to himself on Twitter. A campaign hashtag #JebCanFixIt inspired howling mockery on the micro-blogging platform in November, the Sun-Sentinel reported.
