Hillary wants a break, but maybe just a little one
Hillary Clinton is committed to remaining U.S. secretary of state through Barack Obama’s first term. What will she want then? The answer seems to be “spare time”. But maybe just a little.
Hillary’s future has long been the subject of swirling speculation. Would she run for president against Obama in 2012? Join his ticket as the vice presidential nominee? Replace Bob Gates at the Pentagon?
The only sure bet is that she’s content to remain in the Obama administration through 2012.
“I have committed to President Obama that I will stay with him this first term and I intend to do so,” Hillary tells NBC’s Today show.
Asked specifically about a second term at State: “That is not something that I’m in any way committing to or even thinking about.”
In fact, what interests her most seems to be of a personal nature.
“I am looking forward to returning to private life, something that I haven’t had the experience of for a long time now,” Hillary says.
Mum’s the word on Clinton family wedding
“My lips are sealed… I’m under strict orders not to talk about it,” Secretary of State Hillary Clinton revealed in an NBC interview.
The “it” she’s referring to is not a state secret. “It” is the upcoming wedding of Chelsea Clinton, the daughter of the secretary of state and former President Bill Clinton.
The publicity-shy Chelsea and fiance Marc Mezvinsky are getting married at the end of the month. Plans for the wedding are a closely guarded secret. And mother is following orders — no details divulged here.
“It is her’s and it is a family wedding and the people coming are her friends and people that have been meaningful in her life,” the mother of the bride (MOTB) disclosed during a break from diplomacy on a visit to Pakistan.
A lengthy New York Times article on Sunday shed little light on the subject. An unidentified Clinton family friend told the newspaper that Chelsea ” just wants to have a wedding.”
This much is known (or at least reported): Chelsea and Marc Mezvinsky are getting married at the end of the month, most likely somewhere in the Hudson Valley region of New York and the guest list probably numbers in the hundreds.
To those who are still waiting for an invitation, give up. It’s not going to happen, MOTB said using more diplomatic language.
Chelsea Clinton is engaged – for real
This time, it seems, it is for real.
Chelsea Clinton, the only child of former President Bill Clinton and current Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, has announced her engagement to long-time beau Marc Mezvinsky.
The pair delivered the happy news by a mass email sent out on Friday, a copy of which was provided by a spokesperson at the former president’s charitable foundation.
“We’re sorry for the mass email but we wanted to wish everyone a belated Happy Thanksgiving! We also wanted to share that we are engaged! We didn’t get married this past summer despite the stories to the contrary, but we are looking toward next summer and hope you all will be there to celebrate with us. Happy Holidays! Chelsea & Marc,” the email said.
There were widespread — and as it turns out false — reports over the summer that the pair planned to get married at the resort island of Martha’s Vineyard in August. There was no further detail on what the final wedding plan might be.
Despite repeated denials by Clinton staffers of impending nuptials this past summer, the rumor mill cranked into high gear when it became known that President Barack Obama was going to vacation on Martha’s Vineyard.
The rumors had the Obama family attending the wedding that didn’t happen. Now that it’s real, wonder whether the former first family will invite the current first family to the event.
Making peace with the MILF
Grappling with the alphabet stew of world insurgencies can have its pitfalls.
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton discovered as much Friday as she fielded questions about the Moro Islamic Liberation Front during a town hall-style gathering in Manila. MILF has the same acronym as an obscene phrase that gained currency in recent years. It was used in a Saturday Night Live political sketch last year in which characters playing Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton criticized sexism in the U.S. election campaign.
Questioned repeatedly about peace efforts with the MILF in the southern Philippines, Clinton struggled with how to speak the acronym.
“I’m encouraged by what I hear about the progress in the peace efforts that are going on between the government and MILF,” Clinton said, pronouncing it like a word — the same way as the acronym for the obscene phrase.
Then she switched and adopted the local usage — saying the letters individually.
Clinton said the time seemed ripe for a peace deal with the MILF, which has been fighting the Manila government for nearly 30 years.
She urged both sides to work to clinch an agreement while the timing is right, noting how Middle East peace efforts had been idle for years after her husband, former U.S. President Bill Clinton, failed to secure a deal between the Israelis and Palestinians in the late 1990s.
Well said msouth. I love the way the American legal system works. Guilty until proven innocent. Trial by public opinion, and allegations equal facts. A shining beacon of truth and democracy.
Hillary Clinton’s pantsuits get a test run
DENVER – Hillary Clinton is set to address the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday night, but the real action started a little bit earlier.
Clinton aides brought out on stage several different pantsuits, each of them a different color, to see how the color of each reacted to the lighting and backdrop at the convention site.
Presumably this was to help Clinton of New York decide which color of her trademark garment would be best to wear for her big performance.
(ABC News reported that Glamour magazine has a spread on Clinton this month with photos of her wearing “a rainbow of pantsuits from fire-engine red to light lilac.” The Glamour headline reads: “Hillary, we loved your pantsuits!”)
When Clinton came strolling out to check out the scene on Tuesday, she was wearing a light linen pant suit that showed up well in the lighting.
Clinton and her daughter, Chelsea, were all smiles as they tested the microphone at the podium from which they both will speak. It was clear they did not have to talk very loud to have her voice picked up and magnified throughout the pro basketball arena.
“Wow,” the former first lady said. “This is a really sensitive mic.”

Chelsea Clinton dismisses “Monica” question
Campaigning for her mother, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, Chelsea Clinton answers lots of questions from potential voters at campaign events but never from reporters.
But in Indianapolis on Tuesday, Clinton brushed aside a question from an individual in the crowd who asked for her take on her mother’s handling of the Monica Lewinsky scandal, WISH-TV reported.
“Wow, you’re the first person actually that’s ever asked me that question in the, I don’t know, 70 college campuses that I’ve now been to and I do not think that’s any of your business,” Clinton responded according to the station.
The crowd at the student union at Butler University applauded, WISH said. That was supposed to be the last question, but Clinton insisted on taking one more question, the report said.
When it was revealed in 1998 that President Bill Clinton had had an affair with Lewinsky, the news set off a protracted drama that led to his impeachment and a failed attempt to remove him from office.

Now that Bill is seen as a liability, we’ve got to return to the ramifications of this question. Because I don’t think she should be given important status in Obama’s cabinet, especially as VP.
Think about it.
How will Hillary be respected during overseas negotiations if Bill is caught back home with his pants down again? If she can’t control her husband, how will she control ANY position that she’s representing?
