I had read about this system before. In this scenario only women would have access to these loans, invest in farming or other forms of production, and be able to sell the produce to an actual market rather than to ‘loan sharks’, who are common in these types of impoverished areas, at highly discounted values . This way the patriarchal mind-set may be somewhat filtered. Of course husbands would be able to help in the farming or other production, but the power to handle money, at least initially, remains in the hands of women.
